Shifting the Power this holiday season has never been easier. As you prepare for the holidays, we’re sharing some of our favorite sustainable holiday tips!
- Shop for holiday presents locally. Choose locally produced gifts to reduce carbon emissions and stimulate the local economy. We love going to Grand Bazaar on the Upper West Side for a selection of crafts, food, and vintage pieces to give to our loved ones! If you order presents online, remember that items with expedited shipping require more fuel to reach a destination on time. Check out ShopIN – it’s a great one-stop platform of stores local to NYC for anything from home goods, books, clothing, and baked goods.
- Explore eco-friendly transportation options. If traveling, try not to fly, and take trains and buses instead! But if you do fly (and we get it!), generally, the further you fly, the longer you should spend at a destination. Choose direct flights where possible. Traveling in economy and bringing less luggage will also help to reduce your footprint.
- Turn down that thermostat! Nothing screams December more than wrapping up in a cozy blanket and a warm sweater. You can also warm your house naturally by opening your blinds to let sunlight in throughout the day, then closing them at night to keep heat trapped inside.
Another impactful action you can take this holiday season is downloading GridRewards and telling your loved ones to download it, too. Every friend you refer to GridRewards who saves energy gets a $10 reward, and so do you!
