Dear GLC members and friends,

You know that feeling when you've been away, but you're also happy to come home? I had that this week - and I also hope you know it's here for you at GLC. So, this Advent, or anytime, is a great time to come home at GLC, to connect, to find Christ meeting you here and opening up new life.

It's already the third Sunday of Advent this week! So don't miss this opportunity to worship and be together - hope to see you Sunday!

Upcoming and below:

Christmas Wishes for Kids through Friendship Place
Through Friendship Place's various programs (family shelter, outreach, veteran support, etc.), so many kids in need are connected and supported. FP has collected the gift wishes of these kids into one list - and welcomes you to check it out and make them come true! Gifts must be received at Friendship Place (dropped off or delivered) by 12/16. There are still a number of wishes left - check out the list (and instructions/details) here.

Advent Devotions & Resources

Each Wednesday this Advent, Pastor Brett is sharing a video devotion by email and inviting your reflection. Did you get a chance to watch yet? Also in the devotions email you'll find other Advent devotional resources and links. Or, need some peace and inspiration to be in the spirit? Here's a playlist of Advent music, from our very own GLC musicians, from our pandemic music recording days.
Candle project - Jan. 8

On Epiphany Sunday, January 8, join in after worship for a potluck brunch and a long-awaited project! For years, we've been saving the ends of altar and paschal candles, with the idea of melting down and making new candles. So on this holiday about light and something new, we're doing it! Between now and then, we welcome you to bring empty, clean small glass containers that would make great candle holders - think - old glass yogurt containers, holders from spent candles, etc. Participants will get to go home with a candle you made and also help make ones to light our church for special days in the year ahead!

Being part of a church is like owning a really old house together!
This week, some good news and some not-as-good repair needs:
  • Thanks to John Henry, volunteer property agent, who has met with SEVEN different (mainly electrician) vendors in the past month. We're receiving bids and learning about electrical repair/upgrades that may need to be done, as well as repairs to our kitchen lights, and many other projects that have cropped up. It's been busy!
  • In a big step as a part of this long process, this week our restoration plans passed the concept review stage by the Old Georgetown Board! Hurray! Take a moment and thank and congratulate Charles Bushman, who is our project leader and has given a lot of volunteer hours and leadership, bringing together our congregation, architect, the Anacostia Watershed Society, and the DC Historic Preservation League!
This means we're moving onward to permits, bids, and engineering designs. These plans (pick up a copy in the church entryway) for exterior renovation and repair will include demolishing the old bell structure, repairing the bell tower steps, returning the bell tower louvers to their historic appearance, creating a new level walkway and gathering area outside the bell tower, and managing stormwater on our site to care for and share with our community! Stay tuned for more details and look forward to what's ahead. As one council member put it, "what's old will soon be new again!"

Weekly Bible Study: Thursday Nights on Zoom!

Weekly Bible study continues weekly Thursdays, 7:30-8:30pm on Zoom.
We're reading together the book of Acts from the New Testament. Zoom link here or also linked at glconline.net/social--learning. Feel free to join in whenever you can - no prior experience or continuity is required! You can use any online Bible to follow along (a simple NRSV, same translation we use in worship, is here: bible.oremus.org), or recommended print Bibles include the Harper Collins Study Bible and Lutheran Study Bible (with the blue cover, published by Augsburg Fortress).
