The Third Sunday of Advent
A reflection from Fr Ian
During the season of Advent, we await the celebration of Christ’s birth and His coming again at the end of time. Over four weeks, we prepare our hearts for Christmas in penitential reflection. But in the middle of the season, the third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday calls us to rejoice in hope.
Gaudete means rejoice . In some church’s the altar and vestments are rose pink to convey a sense of joy. We think of a mother’s joy as she waits for the birth of her baby. There is joy in looking forward to the annual celebration of Christmas, but there is also joy in recalling the birth of Jesus on the first Christmas. The joy is heightened because he was born to save us from our sins .The joy also extends to anticipation of the Second Coming, either at the end of physical life or the end of the world, the time when believers will be given the crown of righteousness and a place in the Father’s house to dwell with God and his angels and saints for all eternity.
Sometimes I think we lose the sense of joy in our faith . We live in difficult times and many people struggle with so many problems and anxieties . But we are a people of hope as we follow our Lord and that should give us cause for joy. An act of kindness can bring joy to those we meet. Maybe this week we can strive to bring some joy to those who need it most.
This week's service will be led by Revd. Ian Eglin. Volunteers to help organise refreshments after the service are welcome.
