DECEMBER's charity is Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation

The Foundation works to support Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem, a state-of-the-art women and infants hospital located just 1,500 steps from the birthplace of Christ.

Incorporated in 1997, the Foundation has spent the past 20 years bringing essential medical care to families throughout the Holy Land. As a primary work of the Order of Malta — the world’s oldest Christian charity — the Foundation serves to promote its Catholic values of preserving life, fostering peace, and bringing hope to those without a voice.

The Foundation’s impact continues to grow with each passing year. To date, over 75,000 infants have been born at Holy Family Hospital, and thousands more have been touched by its lifesaving care.

Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation supports 58% of the Hospital’s annual fundraising budget and 100% of its capital expenditure budget.

WISH LIST on Amazon.

Just in time for Christmas break, here is a list of books that the SPX librarian, Mrs. Christensen, recommends.

Here in the library, we are welcoming the holy season of Advent. We have many beautiful picture books that tell the story of Jesus’ birth, including Christmas in the Barn by Margaret Wise Brown and Fear Not, Joseph - A Story of Christmas by Julie Stiegemeyer.  We also have many books on all things Christmas: giving, candy canes, snowmen, Santa and more.

A new (to us) picture book that Mrs. Christensen just loves is The Smallest Girl in the Smallest Grade by Justin Roberts. It is the story of “young Sally McCabe” who makes big changes in her school despite her small and quiet nature.

For our 2-5 grades, Mrs. Christensen just finished A Rover’s Story by Jasmine Warga. This timely tale is the story of Res, a Mars rover. From his fascinating, inhuman perspective, he shares the story of his beginning, his growing awareness of his surroundings, his trying to understand humans and their emotions, and the adventures he experiences on his mission. Paired with the Good Night Oppy documentary now streaming that tells the remarkable tale of the Mars Opportunity rover, A Rover’s Story is perfect for our young space explorers.

Finally, for our 5-8th graders, Ruta Sepetys' new novel, I Must Betray You, is a fascinating story of a teen’s life in a communist dictatorship in the mid-1980s. 17-year old Cristian is caught in a web of lies, spies, and suspicion as he tries to navigate high school, first love, and family turmoil -- all while dealing with constant surveillance and possible betrayal.

We are seeing an increase in students testing positive for the flu. If your child has symptoms including cold-like symptoms , gastro-intestinal symptoms with or without a fever it would be wise to have them tested.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
We will keep you informed of any changes.Thank you for entrusting your child to us.

RSV  Respiratory Syncytial Virus  A common respiratory virus that causes cold-like symptoms, can be serious for infants and older adults.

SYMPTOMS
Runny nose, decrease in appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever and wheezing.
Take steps to relieve symptoms:
* Manage fever, over the counter fever reducers.such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.NEVER GIVE ASPIRIN TO CHILDREN.
* Drink enough fluids
*Talk to your healthcare provider before giving your child non-prescription cold medications. Some medications contain ingredients that are not good for children.
RSV can cause more serious health problems such as bronchitis, an inflammation of the small airways in the lungs, and pneumonia, an infection in the lungs.

RSV TRANSMISSION
* An infected person coughs or sneezes
*You get virus droplets from a cough or sneeze in your eyes, nose or mouth
*Direct contact with the virus, like kissing the face of a child with RSV
*You touch a surface that has the virus on it, like a doorknob, and then touch your face before washing your hands.
As always hand washing is the best option to control the spread of RSV

Please stay safe and have a HAPPY and HEALTHY THANKSGIVING

Do a good deed for Jesus: Christmas crèche project for kids
Advent is the perfect opportunity to teach children about the importance of giving and of loving others by imitating Jesus. Just as "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son" (John 3:16), so too can children prepare for Jesus' birth by imitating God's love for others.

The diocese offers this 50th anniversary family project as a resource for your families: a Christmas crèche (or manger) that children can make from popsicle sticks, then fill with straw to soften the bed where the Baby Jesus will lay – placing a piece of straw for each good deed they do during Advent.

Download and share the flyer (link below) with your families and encourage them to start this new Christmas tradition to grow in holiness and prepare for the birth of Jesus.

Christmas crèche flyer: English & Español.

“You could call this 50th anniversary year a ‘Year of Faith.’ We are proclaiming along with St. Peter in today’s Gospel: ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God’ (Mt 16: 16).”

— Bishop Jugis, in his homily for the opening Mass of the 50th anniversary

“Faith More Precious than Gold” (1 Peter 1:7)

The Diocese of Charlotte celebrates its golden anniversary in 2022 –
a year to be hallmarked by a renewal of our Catholic faith. Celebrations include a diocese-wide Marian Pilgrimage, the 2022 Eucharistic Congress, family-friendly events, 50 Acts of Charity, and historical highlights of the Church in western North Carolina from missionary times to today’s diverse and growing diocese.

Throughout this anniversary year, let us recall the past with gratitude, celebrate the present with joy, and look to the future with hope that we might glorify God and strengthen our diocesan family –
above all, affirming our faith which is “more precious than gold.”

Help protect all of God’s children
Everyone has a role to play in protecting children. North Carolina law requires all adults to immediately report suspected child abuse by anyone to law enforcement agencies. If you know or suspect that a minor (person under 18) has been abused, please call 9-1-1 or contact local law enforcement.
Also, if you have information about possible sexual abuse or misconduct by any clergy, employee or volunteer of the Diocese of Charlotte, report concerns securely and anonymously 24/7 over the phone or online: 1-888-630-5929 or
www.
