GRLI Newsletter Banner: Reporting on recent and upcoming GRLI work
Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.
― Rainer Maria Rilke

Dear Partners, Associates and friends of GRLI -

In our final newsletter of the year we look back on some of the highlights of the GRLI's key 2022 actions and initiatives and look ahead to the work we're planning for 2023.

With in-person activities inhibited during the preceding years, 2022 saw an unusual number of actions and initiatives come to fruition. We have been fortunate enough to be involved in chairing and sitting on panels for global forums, roundtables and events; implementing bold new initiatives from our Courageous Conversations to The Responsible Leadership Dialogues; hosting partner and associate gatherings, including our first in-person Deans and Directors' Cohort since the pandemic; and co-facilitating courses and conferences - to name but a few.

As we look ahead to 2023, we are excited about the opportunities to continue advocating, convening and facilitating on initiatives that our Partners and Associates prioritise; many are underway or in planning stage including a second intake of the collaborative course 'Globally Responsible Leadership for Sustainable Transformation'; our GRME Webinar Series; and a gathering of Deans in Sharjah (October 2023) and another penciled in for 2024 in Stellenbosch. Throughout 2023, the GRLI partnership will continue to build alliances and demonstrate the power of relational innovation through innovative forms of governance and alliance building. Subscribe to our updated events calendars to stay in the loop.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a restful and blessed festive season. We look forward to connecting again in the new year.

The GRLI office will be partially offline from 21 December to 10 January.

Please write if you have any feedback, questions or suggestions on any of the items in this newsletter.

Warm wishes,

John North
Executive Director -- GRLI Foundation

 'All Gathering Momentum' 2022

Thank you to all those who attended our virtual All Gathering Momentum event last month. It was wonderful to see so many Partners, Associates and friends of the GRLI; your contributions were valued and we look forward to continuing to work with you all in the new year.

Our AGM spanned "Past to present" (part 1) and "Acting into the future" (part 2). It included updates from the GRLI office and a wide range of contributions from Partners, Associates, Guardians and Board Members closely involved in activation and amplification of our work.

For those who missed it the recording of the AGM is now available to view.

A message from our Chair

Claire Maxwell
It was wonderful to see so many Partners, Associate Partners and Individual Associates at our recent AGM.  Some of what I am sharing with you in this message formed part of the AGM welcome but I make no apology for the repetition; sometimes there are some things that can stand being said or heard more than once.

Despite challenging circumstances and contexts, previously impenetrable boundaries and barriers are being dismantled in the activation of positive change and impact in our landscape.

Our 2023 calendar

We recently updated our 2023 event calendars covering all of our governance, pod, courageous conversation and external advocacy initiatives. Partners and Associates can subscribe to the various calendars and receive auto-updates as the calendar develops!
The Collaborative Course "Globally Responsible Leadership for Sustainable Transformation" will again be offered in 2023. This world-first post-graduate level course brings multiple perspectives from around the world on leading organisations in a sustainably transformative way.

The closing date for expressions of interest is 14 February with modules commencing on 6 March 2023. Partners and Associates who refer students will share in the programme revenue and we're interested in developing more of these collaborative offerings in 2023.

Welcoming AMS and the Global Leadership Skills program

Antwerp Management School (AMS) is our newest Associate Partner and warmly welcomed into the network. Recently they invited other Partners and Associates to join their Global Leadership Skills Initiative. This program targets development of knowledge, reflective capacity and skills in the fields of self-awareness, global mindset and societal consciousness.

Is insistence on growth the elephant in the room?

Earlier this year, John North hosted a panel discussion at the Global Governance SABSA Event, which explored the theme of managing and measuring environmental issues for sustainability. Joined by Head of PRME, Mette Morsing and Co-founder and Director of Incite Jonathon Hanks, the panel had a lively discussion on the topic, highlighting some ways of working and key barriers that are important considerations in the development of how we manage and measure effectively.

Joint Sustainability Transition Survey

Thanks to those who completed the Joint Sustainability Transition Survey conducted by Sasin School of Management. The purpose of the survey was to capture valuable insights across geographies, industries and company sizes on any differences in motivations, priorities, barriers and enablers with respect to companies' sustainability transitions.

The survey has now concluded and Sasin has kindly defined and shared the main insights with us. You can read these here.
