Aloha Friends and Supporters,

We continue to be inundated with bad news these days. The proliferation of violent acts against humanity around our planet, coupled with the impacts of climate change and viral diseases, creates stress, anger, depression, or of all of these combined.

Because our service at Big Brothers Big Sisters revolves around human relationships, it’s clear to me that building more positive relationships can be a major part of the solution to many of our challenges; or at least, to helping us work together to solve them. We all wish for world peace, but haven’t found a way to achieve it – yet.

At last month’s Na Lei Aloha Bridge of Friendship gathering of a wide range of folks who are committed to improving our community, it was emphasized that our personal prejudices may evolve, or devolve, into harmful, hurtful behavior. The solution? More kindness and empathy. Our presenter, Dr. Kimo Alameda, said that the most important word is “empathy,” and the most important sentence is, “let me see if I understand what you’re saying.” If we curb our tendency to judge another person’s beliefs as being bad or wrong based solely on our own beliefs or prejudices, and if we respect the other person’s point of view even if we disagree with it, we have a chance to peacefully co-exist.

Our Big Brothers Big Sisters mantra is that every child has the potential to succeed in life. Similarly, I believe that every adult has the potential to empathize with and be kind to others which can help the world be a better, more peaceful place.

In our fast-paced, competitive world, this can be easier said than done; but I’m game to try and hope you are too. It starts with the right attitude which is something we can control. Let’s build some momentum this Holiday season and kick-off 2023 with renewed hope for better relationships among everyone.

This is our final e-newsletter for 2022, so I’d like to say Mahalo to all of our wonderful volunteers, staff, board members, parents/guardians of the children we mentor, and all of you who support us so well. Our “village” makes a huge positive difference in the world.

Wishing you peace and great connections,

Match Anniversary: Ten Years of Mentorship!
Watch our November feature on Living808 as our volunteer mentor Tim shares his 10-year journey with his youth, DJ. Parent/Guardian Nita also expresses her gratitude in this episode:
"An important component of Big Brothers Big Sisters is our case manager, Nate Fong.  Wonderful person.  Uncle Nate, as we would call him, consistently checked in with me and the boys to see how things were going...me and the boys would say how Big Brothers and Big Sisters should be called Big Brothers Big Sisters and Uncles, because Uncle Nate had a huge heart and looked out for the keiki and their families."
KAUA‘I
Mentor Chris and Youth Titus, have been matched for 2 years now. Chris has been a consistently caring and positive role model for Titus who lives with his Aunty and three cousins in a humble neighborhood on Kaua'i. Chris takes his role seriously, as he is a dependable and honest mentor. He is easy to communicate with and has been proven to be a stable, responsible, dedicated, loving person with integrity and a huge heart. He is adored by both Titus and his Aunty.  Mahalo Chris!

Below:  Allegra and Kina were busy at work this month delivering presents that our Holiday Angels gifted to our youth.  We also hosted a beach outing for our Kauai ohana to share the joy.

A village is what every youth needs. With your help, we can keep making our village stronger and bigger, and empower our keiki’s biggest possible futures.

“A changing season means new opportunities for more than just your summer wardrobe. When you donate your gently used clothing and household goods to us, you’re helping both Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii and Goodwill Hawaii provide life changing opportunities to local people in need. Clean out your closet and donate to your nearest Goodwill Hawaii-BBBS attended donation centers located at the Kihei Recycling and Redemption Center (Maui), the Pukalani Longs Drug parking lot (Maui), or St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Aiea (Oahu).”
