LICENSE PLATES & READERS
Let's talk license plates.

First of all, the love for the specialTEA license plates is real and we are grateful! Please keep tagging us on social media and emailing your license plate pictures to us. No matter how you let us know, be sure to blur/cross out your tag number.

While we're excited about y'all rocking with us along the highways and byways, there's another license plate situation that is getting closer to hitting the streets.

This week, the Metro Nashville City Council voted 22 yes, 13 no, and 1 abstain, to proceed with a 6-month pilot program to use license plate readers (LPRs) in crime solving and prevention.

Metro Nashville Police Department Chief John Drake explained the department's intention this way:

“I want to be very clear. Our police department wants to use license plate readers to identify suspects who flee from scenes, identify people in carjackings. We want to help find children who are missing and our senior citizens who are missing as well. We have no interest in using them for any other purpose then what I stated."

Groups and individuals that oppose the LPRs often cite the disproportionate use of the technology against Black, Latinx, and immigrant communities.

If only the LPRs could be used to find missing people, solve and prevent crimes, and not cause more harm to communities of color.
