Newsletter - December 2022

Welcome to our December newsletter and we hope you are all keeping well and enjoying the start of the Festive Season.

With Autumn quickly turning to winter we wanted to remind you that if you haven't had your vaccine booster yet, there's still time!  While vaccines are important for everyone, if you have diabetes, we’d strongly encourage you to get your coronavirus booster vaccine as well as your flu jab this winter.  More details can be found below in the Latest news from DiABETES UK section.

Whilst Zoom was a great way to stay in touch during the pandemic and the subsequent "being careful" period, we finally managed to get together for a Face to Face event and you can see the details below in the Local News section

To get you into the holiday mood we have a fun festive quiz for you to try with your families and friends.  Answers are at the end of this newsletter.

Latest news from DiABETES UK

https://www.diabetes.org.uk

The DiABETES UK website is continually being updated with useful information and below is a selection of the latest items from the website -

Coronavirus vaccines and diabetes

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/about_us/news/coronavirus-vaccines

If you have diabetes, we strongly encourage you to get your coronavirus booster vaccine as well as your flu jab this winter. This is because people with diabetes are vulnerable to developing a severe illness if they get coronavirus (Covid-19) or flu, and vaccines are the most effective way to prevent that from happening. Being ill with Covid or flu can make your blood sugars go all over the place. Your body needs to work overtime to fight the illness, making it harder to manage your diabetes. Research shows that having both jabs will reduce your risk of getting seriously ill with Covid or flu.

Getting both jabs will also reduce your risk of becoming ill with both Covid and flu at the same time. You can find more information about how to get your vaccines on your local NHS website. If you have any uncertainty about what vaccines you’re entitled to or have any questions about getting your jabs, speak to your healthcare team or call our free helpline on 0345 123 2399.

Budget meal plan

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/meal-plans/budget

With the UK currently in a cost of living crisis, more and more of us are having to manage our finances more carefully.

With this in mind, we have devised a delicious, nutritious, budget-friendly weekly meal plan. This is ideal if you want to save money on food shopping and reduce your food waste.

There’s no one-size-fits-all way of eating, but the budget meal plan is both calorie and carb counted for your convenience, and contains at least five portions of fruit and veg per day. It aims to help you maintain a healthy balance, while keeping a budget in mind.

We’ve included the value for fibre too to help you make sure you are meeting your nutritional requirements. We know lots of people in the UK aren’t eating fibre, so it’s important to try and include good sources in your diet every day. Though it is important to note children under 16 years of age require less fibre than adults.

Some of the recipes within this plan serve anywhere from 1-6 people. You can either reduce the quantities to serve as many people as needed or look at the chef’s tips to see if the recipe can be made in bulk and frozen for a later date. This will also help reduce waste.

Please speak to your diabetes health care team before making significant changes to your diet. This is especially important if you treat your diabetes with insulin or other diabetes medications that increase the risk of hypos. Reducing carbohydrate intake and changes to body weight may mean your medication needs adjusting.

You can also download our budget meal plan as a pdf (PDF, 83KB), which contains a full breakdown of the nutritional information per day.

Local News

Note from our Chair.

Our Chair, David Murray, recently participated as an Expert Patient in support of the Medical Student Programme at Royal County Hampshire Hospital (Winchester). David was also joined by representatives of the Winchester Diabetes UK Support Branch.

David has been supporting this programme for a number of years and has always enjoyed doing it.  It provides a useful experience for the Students to gain a better insight on the impact of Diabetes from a personal perspective. Feedback from the Students is always very positive and a few of their comments are copied below:

  • Always good to speak to expert patients and learn about the lifestyle aspect of these diseases. Aids our learning about the social side of medicine
  • Expert patient was amazing, very knowledgeable and made the session interactive
  • Fantastic expert patient, extremely interesting and a real pleasure to talk to the patient
  • This session was very useful and the patient was extremely helpful and knowledgeable.
  • Very informative and much better having the patient face to face. Felt I could ask better questions and gain a more complete understanding.

David hopes that these sessions will help persuade the Students to specialise, or at least take an active medical interest in Diabetes.

Coffee & Chat – October 2022

In October we held a Coffee & Chat session in The Cafe at Waitrose which was well attended.  Attendees welcomed the chance to have friendly informative discussions with people like themselves who are living with the same types of problems and concerns.

Feedback from the group was that a similar event on a weekend would be good for those people who work and combining it with a short walk was another suggestion.  We arranged an event in November and details of how this went are below.

Walk, Coffee & Chat – November 2022

We were very lucky to have wonderful bright weather for our Walk, Talk, Coffee & Chat on Sunday 20th November.

We met at 10:00am outside of Waitrose and following a photo shoot (see below) we walked down to Eastrop Park and did a circuit of the two lakes.

Tilly came well prepared with a bag of food to feed the ducks in one of the lakes.

We also had a wonderful opportunity to watch model boat enthusiasts sailing their magnificent boats around the second lake.

After completing our circuit we returned to Waitrose and made great use of The Café for a well deserved coffee. We were joined by more members of our group and we all spent a happy hour chatting and sharing our experiences of living with diabetes. The general consensus was that we need to repeat this event in the New Year and we hope you will be able to join us. More details of future events can be found below.

CPC Group

Just before the deadline for the publication of this newsletter, we were asked to give a brief presentation on Diabetes and to discuss health matters at the CPC Group. You are probably thinking as we did – who or what is the CPC Group? It stands for Chai Pe Charcha which means “discussions over tea” in Hindi.  It is a social group that meets regularly for discussions and activities locally in Basingstoke.

We thought who would want to turn down the offer of tea …... and biscuits in moderation…... so we immediately agreed. We were pleased that we did.  It was a great opportunity to meet other people, to discuss various health matters and to spread the message about Diabetes Health Care.  All attendees enjoyed the frank and open discussion and everybody learnt that bit more from each other’s perspective.

We would welcome the opportunity to repeat this type of event with other groups.
