A Church for Circular Head - Making Disciples of Jesus

Waiting: Advent in Isaiah
This month before we reach the joyful celebration of Christmas, the church has traditionally entered the season of Advent. The word itself means ‘coming’, and is a time where we not only remember the first coming of Christ, but we longingly wait for his return.

To help us see through the distractions of this season, we are spending the four weeks of Advent looking at some key passages from the Prophet Isaiah that give us a vision of the King who is to come, and the perfected creation. They are passages that I pray will help us long and wait for the return of the Lord Jesus.

Christmas Eve for Everyone 5:30pm Sausage Sizzle 6pm Carols
This year, we want to celebrate Christmas together, with a service for everyone. Instead of having multiple services of different styles that mean we never get to celebrate together, we are going to try something different. We will have a free BBQ at 5:30pm. We will have a service start at 6pm. The service will be inspired by the traditional 9 lessons and carols. The lessons (Bible readings) will be familiar, but will also  include some different ways of presenting them that will hopefully help engage the young ones. The carols will be a mix of old  and new (let’s be honest, mostly old).

I hope it will be a time for us to enjoy celebrating Christmas together, but also an easy invite to invite some of your family and friends who don’t normally come along to church, for them to hear what Christmas is all about, and the wonderful life giving hope it brings. So please be praying, and be thinking about people you could be inviting to join you that night.

Christmas Day 10am
We will also celebrate Christmas together on Christmas Day which is a Sunday this year. I appreciate  many have other commitments, but for those who are around it would be great to meet together on this special day. It will be a fairly low key service, but we will share the Lord’s Supper together to remember why Jesus was born that night so long ago in Bethlehem.

Nankervises Away – No Church New Year’s Day
After Christmas the Nankervises will be heading back to Sydney for just over a week. We should be back on Wednesday 4th January. The next service will be the 8th January 2023.

17 people who heard, and one who hid under his blanket...

6 year old P had contracted dengue fever and needed to go to hospital immediately.  After being admitted and receiving the treatment she needed, little P settled well and soon her mother had time to look around the ward at the others who were sick and suffering, all in close proximity to one another. P's mother saw their needs and offered to send her husband out to buy this and that in order to help.  Other parents were grateful, but curious, why would she do this? Why would she help them? As she started to share with one, and then another, of how she knew Jesus and how He loved and cared for her, so she in turn felt the need to love and care for others, soon she had a ward full of people eagerly asking questions.  As she became overwhelmed with the interest and earnest questions, she soon called her friend, Elim's principal, to come and help.  When he entered the room, he asked if there were any there who wanted to hear the Good News Of Jesus?  17 people, wide eyed, listened to his message and received it gladly, while just one hid under his blanket uninterested.

Give thanks
  • For the life and witness of Maurice's uncle Noel who recently went home to be with the Lord.
  • For Elim Bible College, that it can be a beacon of light to the village that surrounds it.
  • For the opportunity hospital patients had to hear a message of truth and hope.
  • For those, like Paris, who are helping to equip us for God's call.
Please pray
  • For Maurice and our family as we grieve the loss of a much loved patriarch, and for Maurice's safe return to Cambodia next month.
  • For those in hospital who recently heard the truth of God's promises, pray they will make contact with other Christians when they return home to their villages, and that they will be strengthened and encouraged through those relationships.
For the one under the blanket, Jesus always searches out the one.
Who can be a language teacher?
This was a question posed to us when we attended our missionary training.  After a lot of discussion about university degrees, experience, being bi-lingual etc... Our instructor finally said that basically anyone who speaks that language can be your teacher - providing they have their front teeth!  Well as you can see Maurice's teacher, Paris, certainly has a gorgeous smile, and she may only be 6 years old, but she's also learning reading and writing at the same level Maurice is, so she's made a perfect language teacher.  When she comes home from school, she gets out her books and goes over her lesson with him, carefully and patiently pronouncing the new vowels for him to repeat.
