LWVHC UPDATES

December 25, 2022

"The goal is to be welcoming to all faiths and their important role in our common life, but it is a real mistake to try to secularize American political discourse. It removes one of the primary sources of visions of justice in American history. It's the vision that was behind the abolition movement and the civil rights movement and other movements for social justice in our history."

Michael Gerson, an American journalist and speechwriter, was a neoconservative op-ed columnist for The Washington Post. More about Gerson HERE

                             HIGHLIGHTS
                    from our Holiday Party

Our holiday party, held Sunday, December 11th at Carriage Park Clubhouse, was nothing short of a blast with a wonderful chance to socialize and share our unique holiday traditions. Members brought 232 lbs. of food which we donated Monday morning to Interfaith Assistance Ministry's food pantry.  Check out photos from the event at the Photo Gallery HERE

HAPPY HOLIDAYS & NEW YEAR TO ALL

Join us to explore the Community Literacy Journal article:
"Democracy, Pedagogy, & Advocacy"
January 12, 3:00 - 4:30 PM via Zoom

The Alice Group engages in conversation around an article or topic of interest. Board member Paul Goebel facilitates our group.

Register for this program where we'll discuss the current state of democracy worldwide and the the need to create new public narratives about the value of democracy often using non-western standards.  To be effective broad coalitions often requiring uncomfortable alliances and compromises may need to be formed.  Can and should we do this?

After registering for Alice Group HERE, you will receive a Zoom link to attend the meeting.  You can find the Literacy Journal article HERE.

LWVHC Education Team presents Mark Garrett, Superintendent, Henderson County Public Schools

Garrett became the new superintendent in July, 2022. Prior to coming to Henderson County, Garrett was Superintendent of McDowell County Schools. During his tenure there, McDowell experienced its highest graduation rates, lowest dropout rates, and lowest teacher turnover rates in district history, and exceptional academic growth.

This program advances the League’s long and productive partnership with the Henderson County Public Schools.

Henderson County 2045 Comprehensive Plan Delayed

The County Board of Commissioners’ December 5 meeting included a public hearing regarding the 2045 Comprehensive Plan. With numerous revisions recommended by the Planning Board on December 1, there was not enough time for the public and Commissioners to review and provide input on the new changes.   Many of the proposed revisions weaken the earlier language in support of publicly agreed upon priorities and goals to protect unique natural areas, forests, and farms.

Please take action by reviewing the latest version of the plan on the county’s website and providing feedback and attending and/or speaking at the public hearing January 3rd at 5:30 pm at the Historic Courthouse.  For more information and to join Mountain True's Henderson County Advocacy Team, contact nancy@mountaintrue.org

The Supreme Court began oral arguments on December 7th for the Moore v. Harper case, and will rule on the case next year.  The Brennan Center put together a short video that outlines the specifics of the case, what's at stake, and the danger it poses to our democracy.  Watch the 2-minute, explanatory video HERE.

                           Debi Miller

League member Debi Miller passed away on December 11 after a brave battle against brain cancer. Debi was an active League member from the time she joined as a member of our Immigration Team. She had good friends in League, and after election to our Board in 2021 she was looking forward to becoming more active when her unexpected diagnosis interrupted her plans. Still, she visited Zoom meetings as energy allowed, and contributed her ideas and support. Her contributions will be missed. Read Debi's full obituary here.
