- The Friends of Fashion: A Case Study of Embodiment and Preservation in a Historic Textile Collection
- Abstract: Fashion and clothing are an important part of the material culture of industrial heritage work, serving as evidence for social relations, aesthetics, trade and technological development. Curators and conservationists continue to debate the best practices of displaying historic garments in a way that acknowledges the centrality of the body to a garment's design and purpose, while also protecting those garments from unnecessary deterioration. The Friends of Fashion group in Chassell, Michigan, maintains a collection of historic garments that are worn by models in “fashion shows,” contrary to standard conservation practice which advocates for isolating garments from exposure and use. My research uses the Friends of Fashion as a case study for new ways of negotiating the balance between conservation and accessibility in textile curation, including exploring the role of new digital technologies for textile collections, in the context of community heritage.
