Thank you.

At this time of the year, it good to stop and reflect on what has transpired over the last 12 months.  Did our New Year's resolutions come to pass?  Regardless of what 2022 brought us, there will be something for which we can be grateful for, something big or very simple that we can look to.

I would like to pass on my gratitude to all our members, for continuing to participate in our programs, events, and workshops.  We absolutely love being able to provide this service for you, and we hope that new year will be better than ever.

Thank you to all the Volunteers without who's contribution to the Centre, we would not be able to bring you these services.  We are grateful to you all, for your part including our administration support, therapists and board members.

We come through 2022, with Covid-19 not going away, a very long winter contributing to some dodgy internet connections for our Zoom sessions!
However, we are starting 2023 with some great workshops, the Look Good Feel Better sessions are fun, if you haven't tried it, join in.  If you were ever thinking about meditation, join Dharmamodini for her Dive into Meditation Course.
And Jo will be back, creating some new Art pieces, more information on that coming soon in the new year.

We are taking a break over the New Year period, see the dates above, we warmly wish you all a Merry Christmas and bright New Year.

Warm Wishes

LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER WORKSHOPS

Tuesday 28th February, 2023  / 10.00am - 12.30pm

We are pleased to be partnering with Look Good Feel Better.
Who provide a community service program, run by Cancer Patients, dedicated to teaching other cancer patients how to manage the appearance-related side-effects caused by treatment for any type of cancer.

We demonstrate a skincare routine to assist with side-effects like dryness and sun sensitivity; provide make-up tips to help correct and conceal redness, sallowness, pigmentation and dark circles, as well as demonstrating techniques for drawing on eyebrows and eyelashes; and offer advice on headwear options, including scarf styling and wig selection.

Each of our workshop participants receives a Confidence Kit full of skincare and make-up products donated by the cosmetic industry. The products in the Kit are used as tools to practice the techniques being demonstrated throughout the workshop and can then be taken home for continued use.

Our participants also benefit from the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation. Friendships and support networks are formed during our workshops that can provide comfort while navigating the diagnosis and treatment experience.

These workshops are free of charge, and you can book your spot directly on the Look Good Feel Better Website. Or contact us at the Centre and we can help you with this.

These are run in small groups, so be quick to reserve your place.

Coping with Cancer at Christmas

Christmas is traditionally a time of celebration and sharing with family and friends and a cancer diagnosis may pose new challenges at this time, sometimes making people feel out of step with the festive season and possibly overwhelmed by the celebrations.
However, there are many different ways to cope with the activities and the engagements that one is often expected to attend.

Check the tips below to find some possible strategies which may help you through.
  1. Give yourself permission to find a balance between activities, self-care and rest. Include family and loved ones in your planning to help prioritise events. Think about what you can manage, its ok to say NO.
  2. Find food and beverages that you are able to tolerate, enjoy and are nutritious and can be shared with others. Discuss with those who are involved with the food preparation to establish a workable plan.
  3. Be aware of your thoughts and feelings, take a step back to check in with yourself, acknowledge any emotions which may be present at this time. Its ok to feel down about what you have been through, speak to a friend or counsellor as needed.
  4. If there are people present that you haven’t seen for a while make a plan about how much information you are willing to share with them about your treatment and diagnosis.
  5. Think about the things you are grateful for during the festive season (friends, family, good food, positive treatment outcomes and medical people). Start a list and add to it each day.
  6. Focus on the present moment, enjoy the day in whatever form it may take. It’s a time of renewed hope, being thankful and sharing special times with those who are closest to you.
Counsellors at the Cancer Care Centre are available to help people work through any difficulties that people may have, please make an appointment to see one of them.
We also have meditation classes to help people find peace and focus during this busy time of treatment and celebration. Available face to face or via zoom.
Don’t forget our library where we have many recipe ideas in our nutrition section and lots of great books on gratitude. Pop in and browse next time you are in the centre
