We are proud to introduce our 14th cohort of equity advocates selected to the Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI)

These accomplished leaders represent multiple cities across the Bay Area and bring rich experience in and knowledge of transportation, housing, and land use policies. Our 2023 cohort represents many of the challenges that many low-income people of color in the Bay Areas have endured over the past two years such as access to affordable housing, cuts to transit-service, investments for healthy communities, and needing outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy. We’re excited for the coming year and moving the BCLI forward in this ever-evolving post pandemic Bay Area.

We want to share some important firsts that we are really excited about for this incoming cohort:
  • All eleven members of our cohort self-identify as female or non-binary BIPOC
  • One cohort member is a monolingual Spanish speaker and our program will be bilingual
  • Two cohort members reside in Santa Clara County
  • We will reflect on deeper issues that impact BIPOC in positions of leadership, such as imposter syndrome and generational trauma
  • We will be introducing a session which focuses on indigenous perspectives and connection to land

We feel honored that they chose the BCLI to build their skills and become more effective leaders. We hope that BCLI is a pathway to greater leadership opportunities. For example, we’re proud of the seven alumni who ran for elected office this year. Congratulations to Ofelia Bello, who won a seat on the Board of Directors for the East Palo Alto Sanitary District, Laura Nakamura who will represent District 5 on the Concord City Council, and Mary Bier who was re-elected to the Pacifica City Council.

We have much to be hopeful for in the coming year and we invite you to celebrate our new cohort with us at our community launch next month. Join us as we kick off their journey toward building more inclusive communities as commissioners.
