EORNA News - December 2022

Welcome Message from EORNA President

December is a time when we have an opportunity to spend time with loved ones. It is also time to reflect on the past year and look toward the new year. “What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year.” (Vern McLellan)

This is my first message as the president of EORNA. I hope I am worthy of your trust in the position. For the next two years, I’ll give my best for EORNA with its member associations and industry partners. In this context, I would like to thank the previous president, May Karam, for her hard work and commitment to EORNA.

This year we finally managed to arrange a face-to-face EORNA congress. It was wonderful to meet all the participants, volunteers, and industry partners for interesting conversations, which is not the same in a virtual congress. In only a year and a half, we can again meet as the EORNA family at the 11th EORNA Congress in Valencia 2024.

I wish all EORNA Members and dear colleagues Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas.
May 2023 be a year of peace and happiness.
Warmly,
Jaana Perttunen
EORNA President

News from AEEQ (Asociación Española de Enfermería Quirúrgica)

The last quarter of the year has been full of intense scientific activity in AEEQ. In Cáceres, we held a Conference with the motto "Solvent Surgical Nurses" and approached topics such as Information and Communication Technologies or humanization in the operating room.

In Barcelona on 16 and 17 November, the Robotic Surgical Nursing Conference theme was "Embracing technology while continuing to care". It had two sessions, the first theoretical of the different surgical specialties and workshops and a second one from the University, with live connection to the operating room of the Hospital Clínic (Barcelona), where a robotic cardiac surgery was performed.

It has had a high participation of nurses from all over Spain and a high content of the scientific program in which it is worth mentioning the unanimous opinion of the necessary training of the operating room nurse to take care of the patient safely in the adaptation to new techniques.

On 25 November, the 7th Surgical Nursing Conference of the Community of Madrid was held. The different hospitals participated in the event, and the most innovative experiences were presented. The impact of the inaugural conference entitled Artificial Intelligence in Surgical Nursing is worth mentioning.

News from AESOP (Association of Portuguese Operating Room Nurses)

On 12 December 2022, a Webinar was held on the topic of perioperative normothermia, to understand why international guidelines have not been fulfilled and because we know that inadvertent perioperative hypothermia remains a neglected problem that is present in many patients undergoing surgery.

The Webinar topics were:

What do we retain for daily practice?
• Temperature monitoring, maintenance of normothermia, prevention and treatment of inadvertent perioperative hypothermia are considered standard of care.
• Every effort should be made to maintain perioperative normothermia, including increased use of warming methods and temperature monitoring.
From 28 to 30 September 2022, 600 perioperative nurses gathered in Santa Maria da Feira at the XX National Congress of AESOP - Association of Portuguese Operating Room Nurses, in its 36th year of its foundation. News from AFISO, French-speaking OR Nurse Association from Belgium

•    AFISO held its 10th webinar with a presentation about The hidden costs of latex gloves and The results of a KCE report on staffing in the ICU. A parallel with the OR? It was a huge success.

•    AFISO actively collaborates with other national nurse organizations to reflect and make some statements on possible future function differentiation between caretakers. With the shortage of nurses, national nurse associations want to ensure that the resources and competencies are allocated efficiently in order to ensure quality and safe care.

•    AFISO sends its best wishes to all the nurses and healthcare workers throughout Europe and the world. May you find the energy and motivation to keep the human being in the centre of the care and promote good practice and safe care!

News from CORNA (Croatian Operating Room Nurses Association)

In October 2022, the 20th CORNA Congress with international participation was held in Croatia.

Two hundred seventy participants took part in the congress. The topic of the congress was the "Operating room  nurse in the eyes of patients", as well as other free topics.

During the congress, we exchanged a lot of knowledge and experience. We would like to emphasize that in November in the Republic of Croatia, the implementation of the unified documentation of operating room nurses was completed,  and  the documentation has now been implemented in all hospitals. Also, it is important to note that the unified documentation of operating room nurses is a  powerful tool in raising the level of patient safety  and quality of preoperative care and at the same time, is a starting point for education and research work.

News from IPNA (Israeli Perioperative Nurses Association)

On the 1st of December, we had our 32nd National Congress. It was an excellent congress, with 370 delegates from all the operating rooms in Israel.  The congress topic was the same as the EORNA congress in Stavanger's "Winds of Change".

During the congress, we gave sponsorships to eight young nurses who are now in the postgraduate perioperative nursing course. The best poster topic was "To sleep the fears" about reducing children's fear in the operating room.

In October, we finished the last project about patient preparation and handover. It took us one year of working, and it was finally published as official guidelines by the national nursing administration of health.

In January and February 2023, we will have two workshops about quality of care and patient safety sponsored by our association.

In March 2023, we will have our election for the Executive Officers of our association.
