Happy Reading Everyone! (A quick note! Your email inbox may clip this newsletter shorter! Be on the lookout for a small button that says "[Message Clipped] view entire message" There is indeed more to read!)
Advent Blessings To You All,

Christmas is nearly upon us, and what a number of exciting liturgies and events we have before us. It all begins this weekend with our Christmas Cantata. I am particularly excited to celebrate my first in-person Cantata since 2019 (I worshiped in last year’s Cantata from Becky and Emmet’s recovery room!)

But as our Advent season approaches its completion, I’m reminded of the often difficult topics it has placed before us. We often shy away from issues that we feel uncomfortable with. I do so out of fear of not having good answers to some of the inevitable questions, but I also have anxiety about what might be revealed about myself if I f tackle these ideas.

But I think the community of a congregation can be one of the best places for work such as this to take place. And, in fact, we’ve done so. We’ve tackled a number of biblical questions, often rethinking and reshaping our ideas of many commonly held biblical beliefs. To me, it’s continued evidence of how we have an inspired and living word of God to call our scripture.

That said, I’m more comfortable tackling a puzzling or even controversial biblical topic, as that is where much of my own training resides. One area that I’m admittedly lacking in keeping at our forefront is that of our monetary stewardship.

Let me be sure to say that we at LCM are incredibly blessed by an outstanding team of financial stewards from our treasurer, recording treasurer, finance chair, and finance committee. Many and continued thanks to all of these hardworking individuals. They and your council leadership have done a fantastic job, particularly these past three years, as we’ve all faced an unbelievable number of unknowns.

That said, the financial stewardship of LCM is not the primary responsibility of just this group of folks but each of ours. Again, I admit that I do not do enough to bring this vital message to the forefront. I apologize for that. What I’d like to do here today is begin lifting up this holy work with greater intention. I want to let you know where we are as of today, as well as dive deeper into the reasons why we give of our financial resources.

As you may remember, on Reformation Sunday, we updated our congregation constitution, allowing us to hold our annual congregational meeting in the first quarter of each year instead of strictly within January. This significantly eases the work of our finance committee and provides them with the time necessary for their work. As a part of that work, you have received this year’s Stewardship Campaign letter, and many of you have faithfully responded. Thank you so much for your continued commitment!

There is still time to respond, however! There are still paper commitments you may respond with or fill out the form linked below online. As of today, roughly 60% of those who made commitments last year have responded for this year, looking toward 2023. We would love to raise this number to 100% and even beyond. If each of us who support our beautiful community communicates our intended gifts, it helps us all to plan effectively for what God is calling us to do in this next year.

And this brings me to what I’d like to finish with, and that’s to answer the question, why do I give to my church community? While certainly one of several results, I don’t give as a means to an end or simply to help fulfill our budget. There are also several reasons why my family and I give, and I want to go into more of them later, but one of the primary reasons is that I am blessed to witness our dollars’ direct impact on our community.

Truly dear church, I am fortunate to see this impact on a daily basis. I see the impact of our dollars as families come into our building hungry and in need and leave with the healthy groceries necessary to satisfy their need. I see the impact of our dollars as students learn, communities heal, and families grow. I see the impact of our dollars as moving worship develops and deepens faith.

There is much more, but I’m honored to witness these effects as I work to answer God’s call in my life. As we welcome the Christmas season and begin to close out our year, I plan to share with you more about what our congregational giving looks like and what it may look like if we grew our gifts together. I also want to share your stories too. Why do you give in support of LCM’s mission?

Above all else, thank you for your gifts. I am blessed to be in community with all of you, and extend this blessing to all in our community. I can’t wait to see you on Sunday for the Cantata!
Peace & Blessings, Dear Church,

Pastor Dave
