Dear Friend of On Site Opera,

I can't tell you what it means to me and this organization to be able to produce Amahl and the Night Visitors for the first time since the onset of the pandemic. Amahl has always held a special place in my heart. When I first considered producing it at On Site Opera, I thought about the characters of Amahl and his Mother, and wondered what their lives would be like if they lived in modern-day New York. They would likely be living below the poverty line and would very possibly need assistance with housing and food. This sparked the idea to stage the opera in a working soup kitchen and partner with a housing organization to build a chorus of folks who have actually experienced housing insecurity. This brings the opera out of its period setting in Biblical Bethlehem and gives new resonance to the opera's themes while shining light on a significant social issue.

Today, we invite you to donate in support this production and learn some amazing things about the impact of our Amahl. Your gift will help us offer the choristers a stipend for their hard work and a modern-dress costume that they may keep after the project ends. It will help us offer children's tickets at a discount for families. It will help us define a new way for opera to resonate with modern audiences. It will help us continue to shed light on this issue while enriching the lives of the artists, choristers, and audiences that participate. On behalf of everyone at On Site Opera, I thank you for your support.

With gratitude,

Eric Einhorn,

General & Artistic Director

Did you know that...

This will be our third year producing this opera with Breaking Ground and the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen!

80% of the choristers from Breaking Ground's housing-vulnerable tenancy have returned to participate in all three productions.

76% of our audience had never heard of these incredible social organizations until they saw our production of Amahl.

Coming back to rehearsal is coming home again. It is an anchor for the spirit.

- Annette P., chorister
