A Holiday Digestion Survival Guide

The festive season is chock full of temptations, from alcohol and chocolate to dairy and gluten-filled sweets. If you struggle with digestive issues the holidays can wreak havoc on your system.

Here are some suggestions on how to enjoy the holidays without sending your digestive system into chaos.

Avoid Eating Items That You Wouldn't Typically Eat
There's a reason you avoid particular foods; most likely, it's because doing so makes you feel better.  Seek alternatives that keep your dietary needs in check.

Increase Your Daily Intake of Probiotics
Probiotics are healthy bacteria that aid in vitamin production, aid in food digestion, and strengthen the immune system.  Being proactive will help keep digestive issues at bay.

Do Not Overeat
It might be challenging to say no at a family meal, especially one that is filled with decadent temptations. But remember, overeating strains our digestive systems and can be quite painful and uncomfortable.

Balance Your Blood Sugar Levels
When you feel satisfied and your blood sugar is in balance, your urges for food are more likely to be suppressed. A trick is to enjoy a healthy snack prior to attending an event where you know you may be tempted to indulge.  Feeling full makes it easier to say no.

Make Your Favourite Foods Healthier
During the holidays, you can still enjoy your favourite dishes as long as you modify them to fit your digestive requirements. There will always be a nutritious, gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, egg-free, soy-free substitute recipe for your favourite dish or delight.

Minimize Stress
There is a strong gut and brain connection. To digest, we need to be at rest, and when we're under stress, digestion takes a back seat. Reduce stress by partaking in yoga, meditation, nature walks, or engaging in hobbies you enjoy. When possible avoid situations, that are stress-reducing.  Remember, t is okay to say no.

Chew, Chew, Chew
Chewing food thoroughly helps break it down into manageable particles, plus our saliva has enzymes that begin chemical digestion.  Sit down, slow down, and take at least 20 minutes to eat your meal.

With these digestive remedies at your disposal, you can stop digestive difficulties in their tracks or better manage them once they happen.

Wishing you all the best this holiday season and we hope to see you soon!
