Winter 2023
Registration has begun! As you prepare for registration, make sure to take a look at the Political Science subfield guide to make see what courses we're offering that fit into your plan and speak to an advisor if you have any questions.

Next semester Dr. Matt McManus will be hosting a bi-weekly political theory reading group going through Alexis de Tocqueville's classic Democracy In America. Participants will go through the book over the semester, meeting to discuss and criticize it. This is a great chance for people who might be interested but hesitant about theory to meet people in a low stress environment and go through a seminal text that many of us don't get the chance to read. Snacks will also be provided. Please contact Dr. McManus if interested at mattmcm@umich.edu

[NEW] IMUSE Winter Conference
The IMUSE 2023 Winter Conference is a week-long virtual forum hosted by MIT China Development Initiative (CDI) and Wellesley US-China Initiative (WUCI) taking place from January 14th to 20th, 2023. Under the theme of “Global Consciousness: Through Collision and Collaboration,” we invite 30-40 delegates from top universities in the US and China to tackle challenges under one of the four tracks — Politics, Technology, Society, and Sustainability.
Delegates will work in teams to identify a challenge, develop creative problem-solving, and propose a solution in the form of a short project. Through research and collaborative work, delegates will gain insights into a key topic in their track of interest, as well as contribute to shaping the understanding and cooperation between the US and China. With the assistance of our community partner, the US-China Better Relations Coalition (https://www.betterrelations.org/), the projects and solutions will be presented to relevant communities for possible implementation.
During the conference, delegates will hear from experts in the respective tracks (politics, technology, society, and sustainability) and participate in discussions on US-China relations and community mobilization. The sessions will be held in various forms, including public webinars, guest lectures, and moderated panels, which feature top academics, industry professionals, and student representatives.

Background:
IMUSE (“Initiating Mutual Understanding through Student Exchange”) is a bi-annual, student-run cultural exchange forum organized by students from MIT, Harvard, and Wellesley in collaboration with partners from Peking and Tsinghua University in China. Before the pandemic, the conference took place in Beijing and Cambridge in the winter and the summer, providing a platform for top Chinese and US college students to challenge each other’s perspectives through field studies, service projects, debates, discussion panels, and more.

Application Timeline:
We will be accepting delegate applications until December 4th, 2022 (Priority Deadline) with rolling admission thereafter. US-based delegates can apply here
Applicants should expect a decision within 1-2 weeks after the application deadline. We may reach out to schedule a short interview.

Logistical Information:
In order to accommodate the time zone differences between US and Chinese delegates, our main programming will occur between the hours of 8:30-10:30 AM and PM, Eastern Time. Delegates are free to schedule separate time slots to meet with their groups and socialize.
The exact schedule of the conference has yet to be finalized, but will consist of mandatory daily morning and evening sessions divided between guest lectures/webinars, discussions, group work, and optional social events. Zoom links to all sessions will be sent to delegates 1-2 weeks before the start of the conference.

A student-led guided tour of the exhibition
An opportunity to add your personal perspective on the university experience to a collaborative wrap-around public art piece that exemplifies how the university experience is a single idea, yet multifaceted

Submit undergraduate research to the Intercollegiate U.S.-China Journal

The Intercollegiate U.S.-China Journal (IUCJ) is a bilingual, annual academic journal that provides a platform for students across the globe to publish interdisciplinary, academically rigorous research. IUCJ’s core mission is to improve understanding of the United States and China’s domestic and international affairs—including security, politics, culture, technology, economics, and the environment—through scholarly exchange. As part of the US-China Better Relations Coalition, IUCJ maintains financial and editorial independence and partners with prominent U.S.-China scholars to uphold the journal’s standard of scholarly excellence.

IUCJ is a launchpad for careers in U.S.-China Relations. We’ve published work from students at  Harvard, Tsinghua, Brown, Peking University, and the London School of Economics, among numerous other top-tier universities. Our authors and team at the journal form a community of scholars who bring new, young perspectives into an ossified foreign policy discourse. The world needs to hear your voice. IUCJ is a platform to make yourself heard.

After two annual issues, IUCJ is continuing to publish. As stated above, we are now accepting articles to be considered for publication in our 2023 annual volume. There are two types of articles you may submit.

  • Research Submissions: IUCJ’s long-form publications conform to the style of a traditional academic journal. We seek to publish, rigorous, high-level academic research that engages with existing literature and creates new knowledge for the academic sphere. These pieces receive primary consideration for publication within our annual journal volume.

  • Short-form Submissions: To complement our long-form research, we seek timely analysis and commentary that responds quickly to phenomena that intensive research cannot. Some examples of short-form writing would include—but are certainly not limited to—current events analysis, opinion pieces, book and movie reviews, and interviews.

Please see our website and flyer for detailed guidelines regarding each type of submission.
