From Wente’s Desk: Identifying the “Why, What and How” of Wake Forest together
This Fall 2022 semester, Phase One of our Strategic Framework process focused on important questions: Who are we now, and what are our core commitments? Who will we become for future generations? And therefore, who do we want to be by 2034, when we enter our third century? Together, these commitments, values and identity markers define the uniqueness of who we are. They will also provide a foundation for further excellence as we seek to meet the needs of our ever-changing society. Read more about next steps.
A Discussion with Cornel West tonight (Thurs., Dec. 1) at 6 p.m. in Wait Chapel
Dr. Cornel West, the author, activist, philosopher, public intellectual and civil rights leader, is coming back to Wake Forest this evening. The Program for Leadership and Character has invited him to take part in a moderated discussion about character and education. The event is open to the public. For more information about the event, visit the Leadership and Character website. No RSVP required.
Important reminders for staying healthy during winter break and the start of Spring semester
The Campus Health Committee is sharing a message about how to stay healthy during the break and what to do before you return to campus. Key takeaways:
Wear a well-fitting mask on public transportation such as airplanes.
Avoid being around people who are actively ill.
Consider avoiding large gatherings or wearing a well-fitting mask if you do attend.
Get your flu shot and an updated fall/winter COVID booster if you have not already had one.
Do not return to campus in January if you are actively ill (e.g., flu, COVID, RSV, etc.). Remain away until your symptoms are improved and you have not had a fever (without using fever-reducing medications) for 24 hours. Read more. For gastrointestinal illnesses such as noroviruses, you can be contagious for up to two days after your symptoms have resolved, so remain away until then.
We encourage you to take a COVID-19 test within 72 hours before arriving on campus in January, as we have typically seen surges of COVID after breaks.
Avoid large social gatherings for the first two weeks after you get back to campus to ensure there are no post-travel surges.
Last day of undergraduate classes is Friday, Dec. 2; see final exam schedule
LDOC for undergraduates is this Friday, Dec. 2. You can see the final exam schedule here. Graduate and professional students should consult their school/program calendar for details.
Wake the Library begins Sat., Dec. 3
Finals week means Wake the Library is back! Come to the Z. Smith Reynolds Library (ZSR) for special giveaways, a snack station, build your own exam care kits, a hot beverage station and more.
Thank a Teacher program
The Thank a Teacher program is an initiative designed to thank teachers (Wake Forest faculty and staff) who have made a difference in your education. As a student, this is your opportunity to let your teacher/staff member know that their efforts are recognized and appreciated. You fill out a form at go.wfu.edu/thankateacher and the Center for the Advancement of Teaching will send your message to the person you are thanking at the end of the semester. Please submit forms by Dec. 10.
Resident students, check out is 2 p.m. Dec. 11; be aware of steps you need to take before break
As you prepare to depart campus for winter break, pack all valuables and belongings you'll need over the break; University personnel will not be available to give you access to your room over the break. Rooms will be inspected to ensure readiness for the break. Your Deacon OneCard access will end at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11 (when all students must be out of the residence halls). Card access will begin again at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 7. Read the full message about how to prepare your room for winter break.
Parking info: where to leave your car on campus during winter break, registering a vehicle for spring semester, and early-arrival parking in January
Students who have a registered vehicle but are not driving home for the break should leave vehicles parked in designated lots by class; see the Transportation and Parking Services website for more information. If you need to register a vehicle for the spring semester, see this important information. Note: The process varies depending on student status (e.g., resident student, commuter, etc.). For parking information in early January, see this website.
