The Sacred Mundane
To find the sacred in the mundane is to be in a rhythm of life that connects us with the beauty of the everyday.

I find the Sacred Mundane in the daily discipline of journaling, in the everyday practice of the piano, or in the routine of sweeping the floor.

We can find it in a snail shell, its spiraling pattern mirroring a swirling galaxy.

We can find it in a peach seed, holding life underneath what seems dead.
The Sacred Mundane can be found in the liturgy of church services but is not always there. If the hearts and minds of people aren't turned to God within the repetition, but instead focused on performance or perfectionism, it is nothing more than stale structure.
At its highest form, liturgy offers us cycles, rhythms, and repetitions that connect us with God and each other.
Yes, routine can be monotonous, but it can be life-giving. As the disciplined skier becomes free to tackle a black diamond run; the disciplined person becomes more free to move in the world.
We are in the season of Advent, an anticipation of what is to come. It is part of the cycle of the church year, a rhythm, a routine. It gives us the opportunity to pull away from disconnection through the realignment of repetition and routine: the Sacred Mundane versus the Disassociated Mundane, where rhythms and discipline can open us to the beauty of the everyday, where we encounter the mysterious and divine.

Let us become more free this season and join in the routine of finding beauty in the everyday, in the sacred mundane.
This Monday: First Fruits
First Fruits: Creatively Responding to Scripture
CoCreate Arts Center, Saddleback Lake Forest
Monday, Dec. 5, 7:00pm

You’re invited to a gathering where we get to activate our creativity in response to scripture.  Last month, our group collectively responded with art, poetry, dance, and song.

Whether you're a pro-creative or just an on-the-side doodler, together we’ll look at a section of God’s word and create in response. In this new season, we’re excited to seek the Lord and make from our unique shapes as creatives. Let’s be inspired with fresh ways of encountering God through his powerful Word and our humble creativity.

About Resources:

  • The CoCreate Arts Center has some basic arts supplies. We encourage you to bring the media and tools you enjoy.
  • Musicians should bring their own instruments, but there is one grand piano in the space.
  • There are hard floors for dancers.
  • We have Adobe Suite for designers, photographers, etc.
So, come experience First Fruits and be inspired in your creativity!

In Two Weeks: New Music + Poetry
I'm excited to invite you to hear a piece of my music at the Mariners Arts Gathering on Monday, December 12th during an evening of creative expressions. That night, we're inviting all creatives to bring their work for a special pop-up show, inspired by the gift of creativity that the Little Drummer Boy brought. So, come share or experience expressions of creativity with us.

Come to SVA's annual Poetry in the Manger, where we gather around a manger filled with poetry and join in readings and song. This year, I'm planning a special atmosphere for the Christmas gathering, helping to make it seem like we're shepherds under the night sky.

The 2022 Advent Project
I want to invite you to take part in the Advent Project, a rich offering from Biola University's Center for Christianity, Culture, and the Arts. Throughout the Advent Project, you're invited to engage with art, music, poetry, scripture, and devotionals centering on a common theme.

I had the honor of writing a devotional that connects with a beautiful poem plus the art of one of my friends, David Wallace Haskins. So stay tuned for that in the weeks to come as we move through Advent.
