Year 6 Twists on a Tale

The Year 6 boys are proud to launch their two online books: Mini Sagas and Writing Hacks. Please take a look! By reading, you will be able to learn how to write a great narrative. You will also see which skills the boys have mastered, and can be surprised by their amazing, twisted tales.

For years now, we have been submitting work to Young Writers in the hope of getting the work from our budding writers published. With great pride, we can now announce that this will be our largest submission yet: we have 41 entries - one from each boy in Year 6. Just like their writers, the stories are AMAZING and we couldn't be more impressed with the boys. They have come up with fantastically original ideas and have written them up in beautifully crafted sentences.

Young Writers publish collections of poems and mini sagas (stories written in 100 words or fewer) and this term we are entering the competition entitled: A Twist in the Tale. Mrs Moscatelli and I have worked with the boys to edit the stories (as the competition requires the work to be without grammar and spelling errors), but these stories are very much the work of the boys and not us.

In the last week, we have run our own in-house competition for the mini sagas with the Year 7 and 8 boys being the judges. The entries were anonymous (for obvious reasons), but I also included two stories from the Young Writer's website; they were ones that had been winners last year (but in the 11-18 age category). Interestingly, the Year 7 and 8 boys chose Solefield winners, which goes to show just how brilliant our young writers are. Congratulations to each and every Year 6 boy for this incredible achievement!

Christmas Tree Decorating

Pre-Prep had a special afternoon in our Old Library together with Year 8 prefects decorating our school Christmas Tree. The tree looked gorgeous adorned with handmade decorations by Pre-Prep boys. They then enjoyed Storytime all together by the warm fire. It was a magical time to start advent at Solefield.

Excellent Inter-School Chess Competition

This week, the Solefield School Chess team played against Amherst School in a ten-board match representing the final match of this term. Solefield played some excellent Chess winning 9 out of the 10 games.

Special mention must go to Richard K in Year 3 who won starting with black, on board 1, against a Year 6 student.

As in previous matches this term, all games started and finished with a handshake and afterwards, some informal friendly games were played, giving the two schools the chance to chat and discuss their games. Well done to all the boys involved who are listed by visiting the link below.

Eco Committee Top Tips

The eco committee give their top ten tips for an more eco-friendly family Christmas, following their meeting this week:

  1. Consider using battery Christmas lights to save electricity or make sure you only switch them on when needed.
  2. Only use non-metallic wrapping paper.  Wrapping paper with metallic designs or glitter cannot be recycled.
  3. Make your own wrapping paper from recycled paper or try to save some larger pieces of Christmas wrapping paper to reuse next year.
  4. Try not to buy presents with plastic packaging...

Spotlight on Jack, Head of School Council

* What does your role involve? I help purchase equipment for the school and help with the facilities as well as represent the School Council.

* What part of your role do you see as most important right now? Making the school days the best and most enjoyable as they can.

* In what ways do you feel you are making a difference to the boys at Solefield? Hopefully, we will be able to make Pre-Prep more comfortable in the early years of their school life at Solefield, which is really important. I would also like to make the older boys' last year at Solefield a memorable one.
