Beekeeper; Russell Deptuch
MBBA Member; 15-18 years
Club Involment; Current member, participates in the Queen Rearing group, current Swarm Catcher and Bee Buddy, past MBBA President.
I started my interview with Russell, by asking him, how he got into Beekeeping? According to Russell, when he retired 15 to 18 years ago, he then decided to get into beekeeping. He took a beginner class taught by MBBA's experienced beekeeper and teacher; Jo Miller, where he learned the foundation of beekeeping.
Russell went on to tell me, that in the beginning he started out with only 2 hives and at one point later on he had up to 80 hives. Currently, he has 31 hives (Langstroth on bottom boards). He mentioned that his bees are a “Whatcom County mix”.
In the past, he has done blueberry and raspberry pollination, however now he mostly keeps bees for honey production, which he sells through his business Bee's Choice Honey and raises queen bees.
While he has not seen any signs of the Northern Giant Hornet in his hives, he said his big issues is with yellow jackets and of course he has strong concern for any potential use of pesticides or harmful chemicals nearby.
Some great tips that Russell has for the new beekeeper; read a lot, do something for or about your bees every day! Reading, building, hanging out with other beekeepers are what you need to do every day!
When asking Russell what has been the funnest part of beekeeping? He replied that, the most fun time was when his 16-year-old grandson helped him with bees and added “My Manta is making beekeeping fun, if not fun why do it!”
We would like to thank Russell for his time and devotion to MBBA over the years!
Thank you Russell!
