COMMUNICATIONS UPDATE

In this Sabin Retrospective, Kayla Hunt, summer intern for Communications, interviewed Greg Bodwell, manager of Branding & Design, about the Sabin.org website rebuild project.

Earlier this year, the communications team launched the new Sabin.org. The former website was outdated and lacked important accessibility features - such as mobile-friendly design and compatibility. This was a driving factor for the proposal of a website redesign project.

The new website was built to meet AA accessibility standards; therefore, it includes a variety of features that makes it flexible and more mobile-friendly. Greg’s favorite aspect of the new website is that the overall usability and design of the website make it feel more professional and current.

One of Greg’s prominent takeaways was learning how to write for the web. There were a variety of tips that Greg learned regarding website writing, which was a huge help during the content gathering and editing process.

Here are a few tips that everyone can use when writing for the web:
  • Chunking content – this means breaking content into more skimmable pieces, making it easier to digest
  • Using many headlines and sub-headers
  • Using terms such as “we” and “our” instead of “Sabin”
Using more accessible language on the homepage and key landing pages; getting more technical for detail pages and blog posts
The 29th Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Ceremony
Awarded annually, the Sabin Gold Medal and Rising Star Award honor individuals and teams who have made extraordinary contributions to immunization and global health. These awards commemorate the legacy of the late Dr. Albert B. Sabin, who discovered the oral polio vaccine and dedicated his life to ensuring everyone in the world had access to vaccines.

This year, we are honoring Dr. Kathrin Jansen and Rising Star Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett for their extraordinary contributions to the field of vaccinology.

The event will occur virtually on Wednesday, December 7, at 5 pm ET. Mark your calendars!

The comms team has created a social toolkit for you to easily share in the excitement and allow your contacts to help us spread the word about the event.
