News from Washington Latin

Anna Julia Cooper Campus

Happy times after a community meeting recently - high fives for everyone!

Dear Cooper Families,

There is no doubt that December is always a busy month, and this year is no exception! We have a tremendous couple of weeks ahead, including field trips, student events, an an open house for prospective families. Please do read on for important information about this week's activities, and those coming up next week.

First, the field trips, starting in just a few days: we have our all-school trip to see the Nutcracker this Wednesday. It is sure to be magical - read below for details. A week later, our 6th graders will be on their way to visit two national museums, one of the benefits of our location here in DC. This includes the National African American History and Culture Museum and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Next Thursday, we will have two exciting student events - a Movie Night (albeit in the afternoon) for 5th graders, and a dance for our 6th graders. We are excited to celebrate with our students - and hope they are too!

Given all this activity, we will add a new item to the calendar - a noon dismissal on Friday, December 16 to launch our winter break. With so much activity both this week and next, I am confident we will all be ready for this slightly early start to the break..

Please read on and let me know if you have questions about all these activities.

Sincerely,

Khashiffa Roberts

IMPORTANT: students will ride the Metro for this field trip!

Metro Fare Options - $5 cash OR use the Kids Ride Free card

  • Does your child have a Kids Ride Free Card? Then all set - just watch for other information to come from Ms. Spiegel.
  • If your child does not currently have a Kids Ride Free Card, you have two options:
    • Send them with $5.00 to cover the Metro fees (round trip) on 12/12.
    • Get a free card from the school by sending an email to Claudia Herrera (cherrera@latinpcs.org) requesting that she order one. Your child will need to check with Ms. Herrera at the front desk. Note that this option requires a week between request and receipt of the cards. All requests need to be made by Wednesday, December 7th to ensure enough turnaround time for processing by OSSE/DDOT for use on 12/12 field trip.

For all the details, costs and permission slip, watch for an email this week from Ms. Spiegel!

The Latin Way

Classical Reading Group for Parents

December 12
6:45 - 8:00 pm

Diana E. Smith Library
2nd Street Campus

Join our first parent classical reading group of 2022-23, led by Diana Smith with other members of our faculty.

Ever wish you could jump into a class and discuss the enduring ideas of the Latin Way and our classical education? Here's your chance! Join our first Classical Reading Group of this year to discuss a work of ancient literature: Sophocles' Oedipus the King with members of the Latin faculty and your fellow parents. Known usually as the play about the man who marries his mother and kills his father, this play is far more than this popular synopsis. It introduces several enduring ideas:  How free are we? What does it take to pursue the truth? What are we blind to?

This is the first of two sessions on the play; we will read the play aloud and then discuss as we go. There is no need to have read the play beforehand!

If you want to get started anyway, please be sure to find a copy of Robert Bagg's translation (pictured above and available on Amazon and other booksellers (ISBN # 9780062132086), Please try to get that one, if possible. We will have copies available that evening, as well.

Please visit The Latin Way page to view the recording of the first virtual discussion, see the full calendar of discussions this year, and RSVP for our first Classical Reading Seminar on December 12.

The Latin Way - RSVP
Students may stay after school until the show begins, and then MUST be picked up at 6:00 pm (through the parking lot door).
Students can purchase $5 tickets from their Community Council representatives on campus. Snacks and drinks will be on sale (between $1-3).
