Plans to rejuvenate Island Bay village take shape

More space for outdoor seats and tables and a place where kids can get creative are among plans shaped with the community to rejuvenate the heart of Island Bay. Wellington City Council approved funding for an upgrade last year as part of the Long-term Plan 2021-2031. The planned improvements and upgrade for the area are designed to improve access, increase safety, and strengthen the suburb’s special identity. If approved, work is expected to start mid-next year. Read more on Our Wellington

Wellington hospo venues to become smoke and vape free

All hospitality venues in Wellington with outdoor dining on Council land will become smokefree and vapefree from 1 March 2023. In support of Smokefree Aotearoa 2025, Council is asking Wellingtonians to clear the air in their favourite pubs, bars, restaurants and other venues. This change does not affect smoking areas on private land like balconies, backyard dining areas, rooftops or outdoor dining that is not on Council-owned land. Tip Shop celebrates being pick of the litter for 25 years

The Tip Shop are celebrating 25 years of turning trash into treasure! Started by a couple of locals in 1997, it became part of Wellington City Council’s tip operations after a couple of years where it was originally run by two staff but has expanded to a team of 20 today. Over a quarter of a century the shop has sold countless weird and wonderful items including a wicker coffin, a Helen Clark portrait on a plywood sheet recovered from the landfill and auctioned for charity, and over 5,000 working laptops. How to use microgreens at home

In Behind the Stalls, we have gone behind the scenes with some of the vibrant characters of Wellington waterfront’s Harbourside Market as they show us how to make their most popular products. In the second of six stories, we meet Benjamin Peni of Valley Greens and learn how to incorporate microgreens into our daily diet. Microgreens are known as a super food and have the most nutrients when they are cut directly from the plant and eaten fresh. Read more about how to use microgreens on Our Wellington.

Easy access to e-bikes being considered

Wellingtonians and visitors to the city looking for low-carbon ways to get around may soon be able to hire e-bikes as easily as e-scooters. On Thursday 8 December, Wellington City Council’s Kōrau Tūāpapa | Environment and Infrastructure Committee will consider whether to trial a public e-bike share scheme. If Councillors give the go-ahead, e-bikes could be on the streets from early in the new year, allowing people to give them a try over summer. They would be hireable, locked and unlocked via apps just like the share e-scooters are. Read more on Our Wellington.
