Dear Niwot Elementary Families,
I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving break. It will be a busy few weeks before our Winter break.
Late Start: A reminder that Wednesday, December 7 is a Late Start day. School will begin at 11:35am. Please do not drop students off prior to 11:20am as there isn't any supervision until then.
myOn Competition Update: We are still waiting to hear the results from the Thanksgiving break competition and for who will be going to lunch with the police officers. As soon as we do I will share with the students and in the following newsletter. Also, be on the watch for the Winter Break myOn competition. I believe it will be a competition that the students will be excited about!
iReady Testing: Students will begin taking iReady assessments this week. Students will be taking reading this week and math the following week. These are very important as we head into break to see where they are academically in literacy and math. Thank you for discussing the importance of the assessments with your child so we can get an accurate gauge of how to best differentiate for each of them.
Attendance: Please continue to commit to getting your students to school each and every day! We love seeing our amazing students at school where they are all working hard and learning lots of new things. Please see below for the attendance policy and when absences become unexcused.
Canned Food Drive: The Canned Food Drive begins this week (Monday) and it will run through December 19th. Canned foods and other items will be donated to the Longmont Our Center.
Scholastic Book Fair: We are excited for the Scholastic Book Fair to be coming soon! Students will preview the book fair on Friday, December 9 and then it will be open December 12-December 16. We need volunteers to make it happen. Please see the link below to help out.
Thank you for your continued support! Please reach out with any questions!
Sincerely,
Nancy Pitz

Colorado Gives - December 6
Mwebaza Foundation
Mwebaza means “gratitude” in the local language of Luganda which is widely spoken across Uganda. The holidays are a great time to reflect on all we are grateful for. If you’re grateful for the partnership Mwebaza has with your child’s school, you can schedule your donation for Colorado Gives Day now! The Scholastic Book Fair is almost here!
From December 12th - 16th, students will have the opportunity to shop for their favorite books and supplies during school. The book fair will also be open after school on December 12th - 15th until 4:30pm for your holiday shopping. Books make great gifts and every purchase earns rewards for our school!
We still need parent volunteers! If you would like to help out, please sign-up at this link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1K0qplCd4kNGk22lRLQrzYQ3kBCpU5hE-u6BUVmYSJec/edit?usp=sharing (cut/paste link into your browser if it won't work).
Here are a few important reminders:
1). Our book fair offers a cash-free payment option called eWallet. It’s a convenient digital account that your child can use for shopping at our Fair. You can also use any unspent dollars from your eWallet account from our previous book fair.
2). If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop online at our school’s Virtual Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and to get started with eWallet and online shopping:

Scholastic book flyers and eWallet information were sent home with your students this week. Please let me know if you have any questions!

The attendance policy at Niwot Elementary is one in which the first 10 absences are excused as long as there is communication with the school. After 10 excused absences in a school year, a doctor’s note is required in order to excuse future absences. A student will be considered "habitually" truant when he/she has 4 unexcused absences in a month or 10 total unexcused absences in a school year. When a student is habitually truant the SVVSD School Advocate can potentially be involved and an Attendance Plan could be put into place.

A reminder that students are outside for morning line-up and recesses when the temperature is 17 degrees or above (includes wind chill). Please remember to send your child to school with appropriate winter gear. Also, students are only allowed in the snow at recess if they have snow boots and snow pants on. If they don't have these items they will still be able to play on the blacktop.

When is being sick too sick to come to school?
A child's ability to learn, perform and behave can depend on how they feel physically and illness plays a significant role in school absences. Often parents don’t understand when their child is too sick for school and when they can safely send them to school. If a student has a contagious illness that could cause illness in other children, they should stay home.
Students can come and remain at school if:
-
They have a runny nose and a slight cough, but no other symptoms
-
They have been fever free for 24 hours without taking any fever reducing medicine.
-
Haven’t thrown up or had any diarrhea for 24 hours.
Students should remain home if:
-
The child doesn’t feel well enough to take part in normal activities
-
The child needs more care than teachers and staff can give, and still care for the other children.
The Health Services department follows guidelines developed by the Colorado Children’s Hospital when making a determination if a student is too sick to be at school. We also work closely with our local public health departments in Weld and Boulder Counties for communicable disease control guidance.
