A new analysis by Ir Amim summarizes alarming developments concerning the Temple Mount/Haram a-Sharif
6 December 2022

A new analysis by Ir Amim summarizes alarming developments concerning the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif that took place during the recent Jewish High Holiday season (October 2022) and that have further contributed to the erosion of the status quo at the holy site.

The different Israeli actions can be categorized into four sections:

  1. Declarations and actions aiming to normalize Israeli violations of the Status Quo that present them as a matter of fact
  2. Strengthening the coordination between the Israeli police and Temple Movements
  3. Police attitude encouraging Temple activists to violate the Status Quo in new ways
  4. Police restrictions on Muslims in ways that violate their freedom of worship and access to the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif

It is important to note that while these developments took place under the outgoing “government of change,” they are likely to deteriorate even further under the incoming government.

Expected members of the new government, such as MK Itamar Ben-Gvir, have long been active with the Temple Movements. Indeed, as part of his election campaign Ben-Gvir visited the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif several times in what was considered a very provocative stunt.

This paper should, therefore, be read in accordance with these upcoming political changes and their implications on Jerusalem’s future.
