Te Kura o Rudolf Steiner i Ōtautahi  |  Christchurch Rudolf Steiner School

09/12/2022 Volume 1, Issue 19

The Early Christian Art Main lesson classes of 2021 and 2022 have created a splendid mosaic interpretation of one of the most famous icons of Theotokos (Merciful Madonna), which is currently on display in the school foyer.
Nau mai, haere mai!
Welcome to the final pānui for the year. And what a year it has been.

Despite all the set backs and disruptions we have experienced as a nation, at school we have achieved a lot. A lot of happiness, a lot of learning, a lot of love. Humanity triumphing over despair.
This year it has been particularly important to ‘hold the calm’. We know that creating a space for peace and presence is probably one of the most precious gifts we can give our children. Advent is a time for this consciousness.

In Aotearoa, Advent is not a time of darkness. Instead is is when the light is longest and strongest. So for us, rather than the inward gesture, we can choose to ‘receive the light’ and celebrate what is both universally human and universally spiritual.
Our very special school celebrations next week will echo this impulse.
The full stop to the end of this academic year. A time to radiate love.
We look forward to welcoming you all to the Pageant Festival at 6pm next Monday.

Thank you all for your support, good will and commitment to our kura this year.
We wish you all a peaceful Christmas, a happy new year, and a safe summer.

Meri Kirihimete ki a koutou.
Ngā mihi manahou mō te tau hou.
Kia haumaru o koutou hararei.
Noho ora mai.

Caroline Gray

Kindergarten staffing updates
Three of our Kindergarten teachers have been on leave this year following the Covid 19 vaccination mandate. I am pleased to welcome back Benjamin Wolpert who is returning in 2023 to teach in whare Tī Kōuka where he taught for three years prior to 2022. Sadly, Marika Kitson and Jenny Cameron recently confirmed that they would not return, and have resigned from their teaching positions.

Marika is a past pupil of the school and taught in the Kindergarten for 11 years. She was well loved by all, and her quick wit and humour brought laughter to any situation. She formed strong, lasting connections with the children through her knowledge and understanding of them, mixed with her joy and playfulness.
Jenny was already familiar with the Kindergarten through her children attending, so when she joined the team in 2019 she was right at home. She brought an enthusiasm and light heartedness to her work that was infectious, and the children loved her storytelling, warmth, and energy.
Marika and Jenny’s dedication and contribution to the children and the wider school community are much appreciated, and they have been, and will continue to be, missed very much. We wish them all the best for the future.

The appointment of a Kindergarten Administrator has been an exciting new development and I warmly welcome Christine Wong to this newly created position. Christine has two children in the school, and she brings a wealth of experience and skill to the job from her previous work in the health and disability sector. As Christine settles into the role, she will become the main point of contact for parents and provide vital support to the Kindergarten Coordinator and teaching staff.

Congratulations to Tama who has successfully auditioned to be a member of the Court Theatre Youth Company for 2023. The Court Youth Company is a training and Performance Company for young actors aged 17-21. It offers an opportunity for young actors to train and be exposed to high-quality theatre making, provides a platform for developing new work by a young practicing community, and has the potential to assist members in going on to work and train in other reputable New Zealand institutes. Students from all over Canterbury auditioned to be awarded a much-coveted place in the company which will stage two productions in the Court Theatre next year. Well done Tama, we are so proud of you!

On the 18th of November and the 9th of December, singer/songwriter Hera Hjartardottir ran song writing workshops with students. It was a blast and we have been so lucky to have NZ Music Commission funding for these two whole day sessions. We hope to welcome Hera back very soon! Pictured here are Hera and Eilidh.
Class 6 have spent this year making dolls in Handwork. This is a culmination of hours of hard work, with their wonderful handwork teacher Janice patiently guiding and teaching them, and the results are dolls that are truly beautiful and unique. Well done to Class 6.
Lost property will be put out Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week for collection, anything that is unclaimed by Wednesday will be donated.
SCHOOL LOCKER HIRE FOR 2023:
Students in the US can hire lockers at the beginning of 2023, to hire a locker it will be a cost of $50 which has to be paid at the school office either by cash or Eftpos (no credit cards) at the beginning of Term 1, 2023. School combination locks must be used for the lockers and will be issued once the money has been paid.

The $50 fee is for the school year. The $50 fee is made up of a locker hire fee of $30 and a $20 bond which will be returned at the end of the year when the school issued padlock is returned to the school office and the locker has been cleaned out and emptied.

If you wish to reserve a locker for your child please contact Lucrece in the school office by email to
