NEW Beaujolais, Brouilly, and Burgundy bubbles  PRE-DEPARTURE OFFER.

If there was an award for the Most Dramatically Improved French Wine Region then it would surely be given to Beaujolais that was looked down upon by its more "noble" neighbours in Burgundy until the end of the last century. But then, partly thanks to the warmer summers resulting from climate change, Beaujolais miraculously revealed its capacity to make red wines of deep fruit intensity, luscious-yet-elegant body, and silky smooth texture. And as the prices of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Burgundy rose to ridiculous heights it suddenly dawned on the wine community that Beaujolais delivered a very similar style to Burgundy - in both red and white - but for a fraction of the price.
Its rise has been meteoric but Beaujolais is now fixed as an undisputedly stellar region for top end wines that compete directly with Burgundy in quality terms and put the latter to shame on the value-for-money front.
Four of the five wines in today's offer come from Domaine du Père Benoit, a small family-owned estate now into its fifth generation, embedded in the Brouilly district of Beaujolais (three-generation family photo, below, in front of Mont Brouilly).

These wines will leave the vineyards in France soon and are scheduled to arrive in Australia in March/April 2023 at which point (if any remain) their prices will rise over 20% above what you can get them for here. These wines will only be available on our website at these Pre-departure Offer prices until midnight tomorrow evening, Monday 12th December. Mixed selections are welcome and freight is free. There are three reds, one white, and one sparkling wine in today's offer. There is one Suggested Mixed Dozen.

The wines are listed in order of increasing price.

The wines in today's Pre-departure Offer are:

#1. Domaine du Père Benoit Beaujolais RED, vintage 2021.
100% Gamay. Average age of the vines used to grow this wine is (a whopping!) 85 years.

You can really see the benefits of having such ancient vines in even this entry level red from the Père Benoit range with surging and vivacious fruit perfume, black cherry and raspberry compote, cinnamon and wood notes, while the palate has devastating drinkability, fresh and suave, elegant and balanced. Classic new wave Beaujolais.
Drink now to 2024.

Post-arrival price will be $33.95 per bottle. Today's pre-departure price is $27.95.

#2. Moingeon, crémant de Bourgogne sparkling white wine.
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay, Aligoté.

The one kind of Burgundy that can still offer great value-for-money is its sparkling wine, known as "Crémant de Bourgogne".
The Chardonnay here takes centre stage with peach and honeydew melon fruit, lemon sorbet, toasty meringue and brioche notes, while the palate is lively, crisp and dry, and perfectly thirst-quenching. Think Blanc de Blancs Champagne with softer acidity and for a fifth of the price.
Drink now to 2024.

Post-arrival price will be $36.95 per bottle. Today's pre-departure price is $29.95.

#3. Domaine du Père Benoit Beaujolais WHITE 2021.
100% Chardonnay.

A dead ringer for white Burgundy: gorgeous stone fruit, orange blossom and jasmine, cocoa and butter, baking bread, cinnamon and delicate wood notes, while the palate is dry and focused with excellent acidity through its spine, long and tingly. Should develop some delicious toasty/honeyed complexity with a year or two in bottle. Good structure and prospects.
Drink now to 2026.

Post-arrival price will be $38.95 per bottle. Today's pre-departure price is $31.95.

#4. Domaine du Père Benoit "Côte de Brouilly" RED, vintage 2019.
100% Gamay. Average age of the vines used to grow this wine is 90 years.

Another seriously-old-vine wine but this time from one of the domaine's best parcels, a tiny 0.65 hectare block at the top of Mont Brouilly. The fruit is plangent, dense, meaty and complex, with mulberries and tar, cassis and spice, mince pies, licorice, cherry jam, cedar wood and roast ham, while the palate is at the full end of medium with supple tannins, round but firm, textured and long in the mouth.
Drink now to 2028.

Post-arrival price will be $40.95 per bottle. Today's pre-departure price is $33.95.

#5. Domaine du Père Benoit "Cuvée Tane" Brouilly RED, vintage 2019.
100% Gamay. Average age of the vines used to grow this wine is 100 years. 10 months in barrel.
The domaine's icon wine comes from its oldest block of centurion vines - a mere 0.1 hectares - at the top of Mont Brouilly.
Exceptional single vineyard personality, high-note purity, black currant and cherry jam, lifted and precise, soaring, pristine, crystal-clear definition, swathed in earthy complexity, cedar and tobacco, wood smoke and charcuterie, while the palate is full and generous, with firm but soft structure, sweetly savoury, finishing tight and long.
Drink now to 2030.

Post-arrival price will be $54.95 per bottle. Today's pre-departure price is $44.95.
