President’s Message

November Park Series
We had a series of 4 Friday evening Park events, starting with the Orange High School, with 24 people attending. We appreciated being granted access to the school and thank Jean Baldwin for course setting and Anthony Wharton for putting out the controls.

Orange High School CSU - Orange Campus Botanic Gardens Orange Showground

The CSU campus was well-groomed as usual. An extra attraction was the Peregrine Falcon family that nests in the tall water tower. The young birds were learning to fly and hunt. The courses were based on courses planned by Jean for the National Easter Carnival event held there in 2021. Twenty people attended. It was great to welcome back Stephen Nugent and Fiona Hawke from their extended overseas trip, including a visit to Finland where they caught up with Konsta, who came and assisted us with orienteering several years ago.
Our last 2 events were at the Botanic Gardens and then the Orange Showground.  These were good fun but poorly attended, with 17 and 11 people respectively.
Each year we are asked to run an event in November as part of the
Orange 8-Day Games, now in it’s 45th year.  On Wednesday, 25th November, we held an event for 58 appreciative contestants. On Friday 27th November, we had a Schools’ Orienteering Gala Day for about 75 children from Orange, Bletchington and Canobolas Public Schools. There were numerous courses starting with just 3 controls and working up to more challenging courses with 12 controls. Most kids were very active, running numerous courses for over 1 hour when we had to stop giving out maps so they could finish and return to their schools.
I would like to thank all those who assisted with these events, particularly Margaret and Nick Wilmott, Anna Dowling and Matthew Slater.

PRESENTATION EVENING - POSTPONEMENT
Unfortunately, we will have to postpone our end of year presentation evening planned for 10th December. This is because, unfortunately, I will be in the Macquarie University Hospital, having had an operation for a new heart valve.  However, the good news is that your committee has agreed that we should defer the Presentation to Saturday 21st January at our property, “Burrawang”, at 50 Calvert Lane, Forest Reefs.  This will be just before our Summer Street Events begin. Details of the Summer Street Series will be given in the January newsletter. The first event will be Friday 27 January at 6.00pm at Elephant Park.

I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and good health and happiness for the New Year. May it be an even better orienteering season than 2022, when we had to postpone so many events due to wet weather. We look forward to seeing you all on 21st January.
Basil Baldwin
(President, Goldseekers Orienteers)
We all wish Basil, our illustrious President and club mentor, a speedy recovery from his operation. We hope you and Jean have a relaxing and happy Christmas and we look forward to competing with you next year. Thank you both for all your efforts this year.
