MOVING INTO A NEW YEAR

We're saying goodby to 2022 and, if we do say so ourselves, it's going out with a bang! Southern Oregon Historical Society has a long history and we've had some ups and downs over the years. But a dedicated group of volunteers kept us going and now a small but mighty staff, a supportive Board of Trustees and those aforementioned volunteers are guiding us into a new era.

In the spring of 2022 we held a Gala that was just the beginning of our fundraising efforts for the year. More recently SOHS was endorsed for a capital construction grant from the State as well as a generous grant from City of Medford to clean and paint the exterior of the JC Penney building as part of the Event Center remodeling efforts. That work will be done by Rick Stevens Painting Company of Medford in the Spring of 2023.

The Event Center will not only create a much needed space in downtown Medford for cultural and community activities, it will also underwrite SOHS's mission of preserving and sharing Southern Oregon's unique history along with the Society's plans for a new museum.

In the photo above you can see some of the tangible results of our hard work - we have replaced the exterior signs with our new logo. However, much of the initial work that needs to be done is hard to spot - things like a new roof and HVAC system - but we'll keep you updated as we move forward!

Speaking of moving forward, we couldn't do it without YOUR help. As 2022 draws to a close we're asking if you might support SOHS in any way you are able. Donations big or small add up to a huge difference and this year there is an added benefit to your gift. When you donate to the Southern Oregon Historical Society this year, you become eligible to direct a more significant portion of your taxes - taxes you’ll pay anyway - to support cultural projects through the Cultural Tax Credit.

We'd like to send our best wishes to you all this holiday season and wish you happiness and good health in the new year!

A BEAUTIFUL DAY OF MAKING WREATHS

We had a wonderful day our annual wreath making event! Many beautiful wreaths were made, hot chocolate was consumed and photos with Santa were taken! We're grateful to everyone who came out and we're extra thankful for our amazing crew of volunteers! Nearly 170 folks came out in the cold and we raised over $2200 for SOHS!

HOLIDAYS AT HANLEY

One day only, December 26 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, is your chance to see the Hanley House decorated for the Holidays. Three generations of the family lived in the house for over 100 years and you will see how the house was decorated across the years. This is a rare chance at a peek inside the historic Hanley House and is a great way to share our area's history with visitors and guests. Hot drinks and cookies will be available.

$10 for adults and $5 for children 12 or under. GET TICKETS HERE

WINDOWS IN TIME

The 1970's and 1980's were a tumultuous period in America and a transitional period for southern Oregon. Kevin Keating will show, through pictures and stories, the culture of the area and how it navigated this period.

Join us in person or online. Windows in Time lectures are free but do require registration.

SOUTHERN OREGON HISTORY

Did you know that SOHS has an amphibious fire engine in our collection? It's true! Here it is carrying Father Christmas in Jacksonville's Christmas parade. And we now have artifacts from Jacksonville's historic Engine Co. No. 1 on display at Jacksonville's new fire station. You can read more about the fire engine HERE.
