Introducing:
“A Three-Step Guide
to Training Computational Social Science
Ph.D. Students for Academic and Non-Academic Careers”
by Aniket Kesari and Jae Yeon Kim
As D-Lab alumni, we are excited to introduce our pre-print “A Three-Step Guide to Training Computational Social Science PhD Students for Academic and Non-Academic Careers.” We aim to demystify the “hidden curriculum” of graduate computational social science programs. We hope that this guide becomes useful for helping students develop the skills and expertise necessary to work as computational social scientists and navigate their graduate programs that might not formalize such pathways. Critically, we hope this guide is helpful for students interested in pursuing a wide range of careers both within and outside of academia.
New Program Fosters Next Generation of Climate Change, AI Thought Leaders
by Rachel Leven
Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS)
When combatting a challenge as complex as climate change, one kind of expertise isn’t enough. The Climate Change AI Summer School gives machine learning and climate experts a common language for understanding each other, and it creates opportunities for teamwork across disciplines.
Current D-Lab Data Science Fellow Meiqing Li found this was “a good opportunity to form connections and build a community that can work on future projects.” “Climate change is a challenge that needs close collaboration between domain experts and machine learning experts,” said Hari Das, one of the organizers of the summer school and also a D-Lab Consultant.
UCB Cloud Meetup:
Optimizing Qualitative Research in Public Health
Presenter: Wan Nurul Naszeerah,
Domain Consultant at Research IT
& Doctor of Public Health Student at UC Berkeley
December 8, 1:00pm-2:00pm
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a cloud platform which offers over 200 fully featured services. Although AWS or similar platforms have been widely adopted for computational scientific research, their usage is still limited in public health research, which often relies on large amount of qualitative data in the form of audio, video, and texts. In this presentation, Wan will introduce AWS as a potential cost-effective solution for researchers in the fields of public health and social sciences. As this will be an introductory session, it is suitable for audience without background in cloud computing.
