Your HavardWIT+ Co-Chairs,

Suzanne Dossous-Verdier, Xenia Parker, Deirdre Schreiber, Donna Sweeney, Afiya Rahman, and Lori Moses

Message from Xenia:

I have been a volunteer with WIT+ since 2019, and it is an honor to contribute to the group in a new capacity as your co-chair. Fortunately in my career at Harvard I had role models, mentors, and sponsors who taught me the value of supporting others. Becoming a co-chair for WIT+ is yet another opportunity to give back to this wonderful community. Whether it’s through expanding an individual’s network, organizing programs for professional growth, or providing space for an honest conversation, I am excited for 2023 and the things we will achieve together!

HARVARDWIT+ MONTHLY EVENT

HarvardWIT+ November Event Recap

On November 17th WIT+ Allies held the first event in the Open Conversation Series: Staying in Your Lane, how our cultural upbringing and identity affect our career journeys. WIT+ Allies Co-chair Suzanne Dossous-Verdier kicked off the discussion by offering her personal experience. She then challenged the attendees to how staying in their lane, or stepping out of it, has affected their professional growth. Thank consider you to all who offered their thoughts and experiences while staying open to understanding other perspectives.

The goal of the Open Conversation Series is to create a space where we can lean in, get uncomfortable, share, and grow together. Through open dialog we continue to shape the WIT+ community to support and lift each other up.

Wellness Resources

While each person’s experience is unique, there are resources, programs and services that can help you prioritize your health and wellbeing while at Harvard:

ALLY ACTIONS

How to be Mindful this Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us, and it’s important to be mindful of our colleagues and differences in how we celebrate. Here are some ways you can support your colleagues who may have a difficult time during the holiday season.

  1. Have open conversations about self-care and well-being. Harvard has several work/life resources to explore; remind your employees about these resources and encourage them to utilize them.

  1. Gifts of gratitude. Whether it’s an e-card or an actual physical card, sharing a kind note with your colleague is a nice way to show you appreciate them.

  1. Create awareness of different holidays. Ask folx if they celebrate a specific holiday and be respectful of differences.

  1. Check on your coworkers. The holidays can be an incredibly busy and stressful time for folx, and a quick check-in with your coworkers can make a big difference, especially if they do not have family or friends around.

Volunteer Opportunities!

For many, December & January is a joyous time of year, filled with social gatherings and celebration. It’s also a time for giving back to those that may not be as fortunate.  Charitable donations are at their highest in December, and research shows that 31% of donations are made in December alone.   And while monetary donations are an excellent and generous way to give, research shows that donating your time is ultimately more fulfilling.

We’ve curated just a few local organizations looking for volunteers this year.

MAC tech helper

ORGANIZATION: Cambridge Neighbors

Want to connect to others in your community and help at the same time? Our elder members need your expertise with MAC technology! Since the pandemic, they have especially relied on their computers to keep them connected. If you have a degree of expertise with MAC products (We have a couple of PC experts helping), we would love to talk with you!

Volunteer Online: Help Ukrainians Learn English

ORGANIZATION: The ENGin Program

ENGin is looking for volunteers to serve as conversation partners for Ukrainian youth. This is a flexible and unique opportunity to make a difference without leaving your room. Plus, you'll make a friend across the world! Here's how it works: we'll pair you up with a Ukrainian student to video chat each week at times that are convenient for you. We match students and volunteers based on interests and schedules. All of our students have a basic knowledge of English, and we also provide detailed session plans for you to use. The commitment starts at 1 hour/week.

Career Day Speaker

ORGANIZATION: KIDS IN TECH

Kids in Tech is a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) focused afterschool program for students in Lowell and Boston, MA. We are looking for volunteers who work in a STEM based profession to speak with our students about your career path at our various program sites. We prefer volunteers to come in person, but can accommodate a remote visit if needed.

Multilingual Volunteer Academic Mentors needed in Boston Public Schools for 22/23 School Year

ORGANIZATION: Boston Partners in Education

Interested in working with a BPS student this year? Are you multilingual or do you have other academic skills you'd like to share with students? Are you from Boston and have experience navigating BPS schools? Join the Boston Partners in Education community and become an academic mentor to a BPS

Judge a Citywide Middle School Debate Tournament (in English)

ORGANIZATION: Boston Debate League

The Boston Debate League hosts debate tournaments for young people from Boston to debate federal policy topics in either English or Spanish. At tournaments, volunteers partake as judges in debate rounds. Judges listen to debate rounds, provide valuable feedback, and determine a winner. Debate builds confidence, academic skills, intellectual curiosity and creativity.
