DECEMBER 2022

Wow! What a year!

2022 kicked off with the launch of our Manning Clark House 3D Tour, which along with our recent Walsh Street and Greg Burgess Studio digital offerings, won the Bates Smart Architecture in Media Advocacy Award. Back at Walsh Street, we were excited to welcome visitors again, with our popular Guided Tours returning and our launch of a tour with a twist – Sunset Cocktails at Walsh Street

In July, the Design Matters on Campus Symposium explored the intersections between architecture, landscape and the university experience at Robin Boyd's Menzies College at La Trobe University. Dr Gillian Shepherd, Dr Norman Day, Prof Hannah Lewi, Malcolm Smith, Graham Burrows, Prof Peter Elliott, Kah-Fai Lee and Claire Martin delved into fascinating local history and studio projects, prompting discussions around how we might design thriving future educational environments.

Eight years of cataloguing, researching, digitising and conserving undertaken by dedicated volunteers cumulated in the launch of our Walsh Street Archive on Victorian Collections. An exhibition of Archive highlights and slide nights (from Boyd's collection of 1500+ slides) provided a look into life at Walsh Street and Boyd's travels. The Walsh Street Archive project was generously supported by the Angela Gehrig Bequest 2017 and digitised by Restore Conservation Services.

We worked with Cracknell & Lonergan and Tin Sheds Gallery to bring the Bill Lucas: Architect Utopian exhibition to Melbourne. Over 12 days, 500 visitors explored the vast archive at KFive's incredible Fitzroy showroom.

Special tours of the Bauhaus and Boyd exhibition allowed visitors to explore Boyd's friendship with Walter Gropius, as manifested through a display of furniture by Bauhaus luminaries courtesy of Mamacasa.

We partnered with the Melbourne School of Design to present 'Seeking Resonance: The life-architecture of Greg Burgess' at Dulux Gallery, and Archives and Special Collections at the University of Melbourne on 'Greg Burgess: From the Coalface' displayed at Noel Shaw Gallery. Thank you to Avington Merino for their ongoing support of the Greg Burgess Archive.

After a long hiatus due to Covid, our Open Days returned with Nightingale Village. We thank The Village residents for sharing their homes, participating architects who spoke about their projects, and the Nightingale Housing team for their incredible work in the lead-up to and on the day. We are looking forward to presenting two Open Days in 2023.

Entries are now open for The Walls Around Us Student Competition which invites the next generation of architects to design a new way to live at Walsh Street - the winner will head to the Biennale Architettura 2023 in Venice thanks to Brickworks Building Products.

Our Design Matters talks and DADo film screenings returned in full force – a huge thank you to all our public program collaborators who contributed to thought-provoking discussions on why design matters and to everyone who came to look and listen.

We want to express our thanks and appreciation to our supporters, the Boyd CircleDonorsPartners, and Friends. Your generosity is essential in enabling the foundation to deliver its public program and assist with the care and conservation of our iconic house museum at Walsh Street.

Lastly, a huge thank you to our outstanding board and team of volunteers who contribute countless hours and ideas with enthusiasm and creativity. From working bees to guiding our tours, cataloguing the Walsh Street Archive, to facilitating events and open days, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. We are thrilled that AMaGA recognised our Research and Collections Volunteer Team Leader, Kerry Landman, for her significant contribution to the foundation and the Walsh Street Archive by awarding her the Martin Hallett Award for individual contribution to community heritage.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Walsh Street in 2023!

Team RBF (Tony, Josephine, Jamie & Peta).

The Walls Around Us Student Competition
Win a trip to Venice for the Biennale Architettura!
Entries close 30 January 2023

The Robin Boyd Foundation's student competition – The Walls Around Us is open for entries!

When Robin Boyd designed Walsh Street for his family in 1957 – he used the opportunity to reject domestic convention and create an experimental home. The Walls Around Us invites students to imagine a new way of living on the Walsh Street site.

Students are encouraged to engage with Boyd’s ideas, vision and research to inspire their concepts. Entrants will utilise the environmentally friendly merits of brickwork and blockwork to create a multi-residential design that proposes solutions to contemporary issues through architecture.

The The Walls Around Us is open to students enrolled in an architectural course in Australia.

Entries close:
Monday 30 January 2023
