Your Autumn Term Roundup

Autumn term was a bumper term for Royal Holloway Volunteering, with the Festival of Volunteering, Make A Difference Day, #iwill Week and the Festive Market all happening throughout the term. Our student leaders have also been hard at work, offering a range of project-related activities for new and returning students to participate in!

With Autumn term over, the Volunteering Team are busy planning events for next year, when we will be celebrating 20 years of Volunteering at Royal Holloway! Stay tuned for more information coming soon.

In the meantime, everyone at Royal Holloway Volunteering wishes you a very restful Christmas break - our weekly newsletter will be back in 2023!

Festival of Volunteering 2022

The Mayor of Runnymede officially opens the Festival of Volunteering 2022
This year we held the first Festival of Volunteering on campus since 2019! It was a great opportunity to invite community partners back onto site to talk with students and over 3,000 people passed through the Festival! We also had stalls for all sixteen of our social action projects, as well as stands for Community Research, Sports Volunteering and Volunteering abroad. The event was opened formally by the Mayor of Runnymede!

Make A Difference Day

Foodbank Team's Community Café Event, which helped spread awareness of Runnymede Foodbank in the local community
Make a Difference Day 2022 encouraged students to get involved with volunteering opportunities available at the university, and to be part of its ever-growing volunteering presence in the local community. These opportunities involved the Community Café, the Tea Boat project, the Love in a Box appeal, and the Love Your Community Garden Club.

This one-off volunteering day was a great opportunity for students to take a lead on community opportunities and make a genuine difference in the local community.

#Iwill Week 2022

#iwill Week is a national initiative that highlights the work of young people in Social Action projects around Britain. We had a fantastic week encouraging organisations to incorporate young people into their programmes as well as holding stalls for our student-led projects to advertise their events! Royal Holloway students also visited nearby schools to talk to young people about volunteering and the ways that it can develop your skills and broaden your experiences!

Festive Market

Our Placement Students did a great job of running the Volunteering stand throughout the day!
At the Royal Holloway Festive Market we held a stall where people could write Christmas cards to local people who would be isolated and alone at Christmas time. Together you wrote over 120 cards which were then distributed to local people by our charity partners Age UK Surrey and the Manor Farm Day Centre. Lots of people also asked our student leaders and placement students how they could get involved in volunteering too!

Santa's Workshop

The Christmas Team and volunteers hard at work
The Christmas Team ran their annual Santa's Workshop event on Wednesday 7 December. Throughout the event, gift bags are created and filled with gifts, which are then distributed to the elderly throughout the festive period. In total they packed over 100 bags which were distributed to local people that would otherwise be alone at Christmas time.
