Dear CFJ supporter,

Cause for Justice advocates for the responsible exercise (and enjoyment) of constitutional freedoms. These freedoms include, amongst others, freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, religion, belief, thought and opinion, and freedom of association.

For many (if not all) persons, the ability to express and live in accordance with their sincerely held beliefs – whether religious or not – and to associate freely with others who believe similarly (and not to be forced to associate with others who believe differently), is inseparable from living a dignified life.

Find out more about what we are doing to contribute toward a society that respects and protects the responsible exercise of constitutional rights and freedoms below.

What is happening at Cause For Justice?

THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS TO FREEDOM OF RELIGION,
EXPRESSION AND ASSOCIATION

During the second half of 2022, we continued to engage in various causes focusing on protecting your ability to fearlessly, yet responsibly, express yourself and live out your sincerely held beliefs in the public square. These include:
  • contributing to the development of the Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill;
  • participating in the public participation process concerning the Anti-Money Laundering Bill;
  • standing against the controversial draft PEPUDA Amendment Bill;
  • defending free speech from overbroad proposals in the Terrorist and Related Activities Amendment Bill;
  • keeping the non-profit world free from undue state influence in the NPO Amendment Bill;
  • participating in the South African marriage law reform process; and
  • keeping updated with the progress of the Official Identity Management Policy

In Closing:

The free and responsible exercise of constitutional rights is important. In our diverse and pluralistic society, everyone should be able to live their lives in accordance with their sincerely held beliefs, free from fear of reprisal.

Cause for Justice will continue making a stand to defend fundamental freedoms in South Africa, in order to ensure we can all continue to freely, responsibly and fearlessly exercise our beliefs and express conscientious views and opinions in the public interest.

If you are also passionate about protecting the above freedoms, we invite you to support our work by way of regular or ad-hoc donations. Without your contribution, we will not be able to continue taking up worthy causes such as these.

Your in Justice,
Ryan and the CFJ Team
