NIHR allocates funding for bone metastasis research

The national Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has launched a new funding call for research into bone metastasis, following the identification of this area of unmet need by NCRI. The treatment of bone metastases poses a significant health and economic burden and occurs in 7 out of every 10 people with advanced cancer. Applications must be submitted online no later than 1pm on 4 January 2023. Applications will be considered by the HTA Funding Committee at its meeting in March 2023. More information can be found here

Meet Our RadNet Community,
Meet Dr Kasper Fugger
RadNet Group Leader

His lab studies how some rare and cytotoxic nucleotides affect cancer cell viability, activation of stress response pathways and anti-tumour immunity. They recently discovered a process whereby cells eliminate cytotoxic nucleotides that are formed during normal metabolism and that targeting this process sensitise cancer cells to PARP inhibitor therapy and can overcome acquired resistance (Fugger et al, Science 2021). In addition to nucleotide metabolism, these cytotoxic nucleotides are also produced following ionising radiation (IR) treatment. In the lab Kasper's group are using metabolomics, genome-wide CRISPR screens, cell biology and biochemistry to analyse the formation of these IR-induced nucleotides and trying to uncover the molecular mechanisms that governs the cellular responses to them, such as DNA repair. Their goal is to translate new discoveries into more effective radio- and chemotherapies for the benefit of cancer patients.
New Publication:

Dr Jamie Dean has published a paper on; 'Phase I study of a novel glioblastoma Radiation Therapy schedule exploiting cell-state plasticity'  in the journal of  Neuro-Oncology.

RadNet awarded 2022 Beacon Bursary

Congratulations to Dr Jamie Dean, Dr Catarina Veiga and Dr Lisa Whittaker on being awarded one of the 11 UCL Beacon Bursaries

They have been awarded funding for a Special Podcast Series with Teenagers & Young Adults, Radiation Researchers & Therapeutic Radiographers. This project will build on our public engagement project, Radiation Reveal, which highlighted less is known about radiotherapy compared to other cancer treatments. The aim is to increase awareness of radiotherapy, Teenage and young adult's experiences of cancer, impactful PPIE and promote UCL’s cancer research to new audiences outside of the academic domain.

Watch this space on updates to the project and hearing the podcasts.

CRUK RadNet City of London and the European Working Group on the Radiobiology of Molecular Radiotherapy are delighted to announce that the 2nd International Workshop on Radiobiology of Molecular Radionuclide Therapy (IWRMR) symposium and workshop will take place as a face-to-face event (with an online observation option) from 13th to 14th March 2023 at the Francis Crick Institute. The meeting provides a broad platform for presentation of cutting–edge radionuclide biological radiation research, with space to discuss lessons learned from external beam radiotherapy. The workshop will also facilitate the development of new collaborations in dedicated sessions that complement the oral and poster presentations.

The conference website is now live https://crukradnet.colcc.ac.uk/2022/10/04/the-2nd-international-workshop-on-radiobiology-of-molecular-radionuclide-therapy-iwrmr/for further details.

Registration closes on the 31st January 2023.
