Dear <<First Name>>,
It feels like I just welcomed you to campus—some of you for the first time—and now we are nearing the end of the semester and 2022! I want to thank you for your hard work, for engaging with your students, and for practicing both academic rigor and compassion in your teaching.
I hope you find time to rest and recharge during the winter recess. But before you disappear into finals, grading, and hopefully some winter celebration, I want to share some Center for Faculty Advancement (CFA) announcements and highlight programs for next semester.
Please join me in congratulating our newest recipients of the James Weldon Johnson Professorship: Ann Morning (FAS), Alina Das (Law), Natasha Iskander (Wagner), Paula Chakravartty (Gallatin), Ernest Gonzales (Silver SSW), Jason King (Tisch), Stephanie Cook (GPH), Reginé Gilbert (Tandon, IDM), Alrick Brown (Tisch). The professorship is awarded to faculty whose research and teaching echo Johnson’s many talents and passions including civil rights, diplomacy, politics, law, and poetry. Johnson’s leadership as a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, and as NYU’s first Black professor are also central to his legacy.
Welcome to Joyce Tan, the new director of the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs (CMEP). Previously, Joyce spearheaded diversity initiatives and social justice from global and local perspectives at NYU Shanghai. Joyce looks forward to partnering with faculty to promote diversity and inclusion both inside and outside the classroom. Stay tuned for upcoming programming.
Please encourage doctoral students to apply for NYU’s Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program by December 15, 2022. The fellowship supports promising scholars and educators from diverse backgrounds for a two-year appointment beginning September 2023. Fellows receive a $62,000 nine-month salary and a research allowance ($2,000). See the newsletter below to learn more.
I invite you to visit our DTA Video Series page for an in-person panel discussion with the 2021-22 Distinguished Teaching Award winners about successful strategies for inclusive and engaging teaching. You can also view videos with prior winners who discuss topics ranging from how the pandemic transformed teaching to what they would tell themselves if they could travel back in time to their first day of teaching.
And looking forward, the deadline to nominate faculty for a Distinguished Teaching Award is December 9, 2022. NYU community members including faculty, current students, administrators, and alumni are encouraged to contact their DTA school representative if they wish to suggest a distinguished professor.
Please read the newsletter below to learn more about new programs and professional development opportunities. Wishing you all a happy and healthy winter break!
Sincerely,
Charlton McIlwain
