Friends —

Small Town. World Renowned. That is what The State and The Bijou are!  Cinematic beacons for those that love to think, discuss, and explore the world around us through film.  These beautiful historic theatres thrive because of your continued support.   Come spend an afternoon or evening enjoying these wonderful award-winning film houses in your own backyard!

The Fabelmans is being held over for one more weekend at the State Theatre this weekend. Come watch this much-lauded movie with your friends and family right here in Traverse City!  Growing up with supportive family and friends, Steven Spielberg's director journey started at home. But not without its bumps and hurdles. It’s a powerful film to watch. Don’t miss it!

We are continuing our revamp at the Bijou this weekend by bringing you the kind of film we only bring to the Traverse City Film Festival. For one weekend only, we’ll be showing you the newest film from the great Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu, the Oscar-winning filmmaker who gave us BIRDMAN or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), THE REVENANT, BABEL, 21 GRAMS, and AMORES PERROS. His new film is BARDO - A False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths. Iñárritu's films are great works of art, films that will challenge your assumptions as they explore the issues of Life and Death and all the illusions that manifest in our world.  The word “Bardo” in the Tibetan language means “intermediate state,” and indicates the condition of transition between two states. If you love Iñárritu's films, you will love Bardo.

The Grinch will be our children's matinee this week but with a wonderfully generous twist!  Our neighbors, Grand Traverse Pie Company, Traverse Bay Children's Advocacy Center, and Horizon Books, are teaming up with The State to bring extra joy to this event.   Every child that attends the movie will receive a voucher for a free cookie from Grand Traverse Pie Company and a free children's book from Horizon Books.  How blessed we are to have such giving neighbors!

2022 is wrapping up, so please take a moment to vote for your top 3 favorite movies we’ve shown in TC in 2022.  The top vote getter will be shown at The Bijou over New Year’s weekend on Dec 30-Jan1. A great way to end the year and ring in 2023!  Voting begins today and ends at midnight on December 19.

However, the bitter grump finds a hitch in his plans when he encounters the endearing Cindy Lou Who.
