2020 La Selva, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
In 2020, we parceled out a few picking bins from the prized Edmeades Vineyard to be bottled as La Selva. When you get some local Anderson Valley winemakers talking about about "the best terroirs in the AVA," the old planting at the former Londer Vineyard (now Edmeades) makes every list. This magic site on the south side of Highway 128 is tucked into the swale of a densely forested valley and catches the morning sea breeze. We harvested on the morning of Sept. 18 and made a lightly extracted wine with 10% whole clusters that smells like the penny royal that grows wild amongst the vines. It's a lifted, minty herbaceousness interwoven with coastal raspberries, violets, and hibiscus. The tone of this wine is so singular—so essentially Anderson Valley— it calls for a simple meal. A sheet pan with sweet Italian sausages with roasted broccolini comes to mind.
