Winter Release Vol. II : Pinot Noir
Feb. 7

Dear <<First Name>>

In 2020, we bottled very little (to none) Vineyard Designate wine and allocated the best material from our single vineyard sources to our appellation Pinot Noirs. We used only free run juice aka “the cream,” a decision that dramatically reduced our yields but gave us Pinot Noirs with great purity. These two wines punch above their weight class and belong on your table.

2020 Lejano, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

Lejano translates to "far away or distant" which describes this new source an hour’s drive from anywhere. It lies between two iconic West Sonoma Coast estates--the Hirsch Vineyard to the south and the Peay Vineyard to the north. The sandy soils are fractured with veins of shale resulting from the seismic drama still unfolding in this young geologic zone. Our rows enjoy unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean and are constantly in the wind---an aspect that likely spared them from any fire/smoke in 2020. Six bins of pristine Pinot Noir arrived at the winery in the early morning hours of Sept. 6th. We handled this fruit with extreme delicacy--100% destemming, gentle pump-overs, and used only the free run juice released during the wine's fermentation. The wine had an 10-month slumber in older French oak barrels and went to bottle unfiltered. The result? A very lithe wine at 13% abv with that electric red crunch we've come to expect from this brisk zone. Smells faintly like a holiday feast with brandy soaked cherries, rhubarb, and pine sap. The impact is pure Pinot silk.

2020 La Selva, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

In 2020, we parceled out a few picking bins from the prized Edmeades Vineyard to be bottled as La Selva. When you get some local Anderson Valley winemakers talking about about "the best terroirs in the AVA," the old planting at the former Londer Vineyard (now Edmeades) makes every list. This magic site on the south side of Highway 128 is tucked into the swale of a densely forested valley and catches the morning sea breeze. We harvested on the morning of Sept. 18 and made a lightly extracted wine with 10% whole clusters that smells like the penny royal that grows wild amongst the vines. It's a lifted, minty herbaceousness interwoven with coastal raspberries, violets, and hibiscus. The tone of this wine is so singular—so essentially Anderson Valley— it calls for a simple meal. A sheet pan with sweet Italian sausages with roasted broccolini comes to mind.
