Dear friends and colleagues,

Twelve years ago, ADN was founded to bring together Africans on the continent, in the diaspora, and friends of Africa to actualize their full potential, activate their entrepreneurial spirit, and strategically mobilize financial and intellectual resources to ensure a brighter future for the African continent. We have consistently engaged our global community in this work through our knowledge-sharing convenings, the African Diaspora Investment Symposium and Impact and Innovation Forums.

On December 1, the African Diaspora Network participated in “Development Without Borders: Mobilizing the African diaspora for inclusive growth and sustainable development in Africa.” This important convening, hosted by the African Development Bank, African Union, IOM, and other institutions, brought together Africans from across the globe for solutions-oriented dialogue. I was honored to speak on the topic of Brain Circulation and the need for a conducive ecosystem to ensure that the diaspora can contribute to the development of their communities.

African Diaspora Network will continue this dialogue on diaspora engagement through a high-level working lunch on “Beyond Remittances,” hosted in collaboration with the U.S. State Department on December 13 as a part of the U.S. Africa Leaders Summit. We will bring this critical discussion back to Silicon Valley for the return of the in-person African Diaspora Investment Symposium 2023. Save the date for March 22-24, 2023, and register today.

With appreciation,

Almaz Negash

Recap of The Role of Self-care as a Critical Enabler for Universal Healthcare Coverage

On behalf of all of us at the African Diaspora Network and Sanofi, thank you to all who participated in the November 17 session on "The Role of Self-care as a Critical Enabler for Universal Healthcare Coverage."

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health worker.” What role does self-care play in Africa? Why is self-care literacy so important? What role can Africans, diasporans, and friends of Africa play in advancing selfcare? Learn more in the summary report and recording below.

Save the Date for ADIS23!

ADIS23 presents the theme of “Future Ready Africa.”

In the next 25 years, Africa’s population is expected to double across the continent. Projections show that a quarter of the world’s people will be African by 2050 (The Guardian). Africa has an opportunity to drive major transformations that adapt to this drastic demographic shift and build resilience in an era of disruption.

The unforeseeable economic shocks created by the ongoing pandemic, international conflicts such as the war in Ukraine, and challenges in the global economy have sparked innovations in industry, investment, and entrepreneurship across the continent. Now, ten years into Agenda 2063, Africa must plan for a sustainable recovery and reimagine its path forward. What does a future ready Africa look like?

Join us as we explore trending innovations, blueprints for the future, and the interconnectedness of sectors including climate change, healthcare, finance, education, and agriculture. How do we strengthen infrastructure, reinvigorate markets, and create a healthy atmosphere for communities? What seeds must be planted to enable a thriving future for the continent? Be inspired to envision, celebrate, and make an impact upon the future of Africa.
