Presidents Report

I can’t quite believe that there’s only a few more weeks of 2022 left! It has been a jam-packed year for AWTRS with our biennial scientific conference being held in September, our first in-person meeting since 2018. There are so many people I would like to thank, members of the organising committee, the scientific committee, the EMCR committee, our invited speakers, our sponsors, our fantastic PCO Small Talk Events, and last but by no means least, I would like to thank all of the delegates for attending the meeting and contributing to a fantastic few days of science! Make sure you read the conference report in this issue written by the recipients of the conference travel award.

At the conference we held our annual general meeting, during which the AWTRS committee for 2022 was elected. I would like to thank Rachael Murray, Pritinder Kaur, and Xanthe Strudwick, who have stepped down from the committee, for their contribution to the society. I would also like to welcome Rachael Moses, Caitlin Berry-Kilgour and Zahra Lotfollahi, to the committee.

In this issue of the newsletter along with the AWTRS conference report, we have a researcher profile from out 2022 AWTRS EMCR recipient Rachael Moses, a conference report from AWTRS member Mitchell St Clair-Glover, get to know two of our ECRs Eileen Wallace and Caitlin Berry-Kilgour, and in a new feature of the newsletter we have Pets of AWTRS.

We always like hearing about what our members are getting up to and their achievements, and always welcome newsletter items from AWTRS members. If you attend a conference that is of interest to the AWTRS membership, would like to be a profiled researcher or a featured ECR, please reach out to our newsletter editors Rachael Moses and Caitlin Berry-Kilgour.

With only a few more days of 2022 left I would like to thank all our members for your support throughout the year, and to wish everyone a happy and safe time over the holiday period.

Dr Brooke Farrugia
AWTRS President

Conference Report 2022

The AWTRS 2022 Scientific Meeting was held between the 12th-14th September in Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia. The meeting hosted leading delegates in various sectors including scientists and clinicians from Australia and internationally New Zealand, and Singapore. The forum covered a wide range of research and clinical presentations while providing an excellent opportunity to meet face-to-face after a few years of virtual mode. The conference spanned across three days covered a range of topics including research challenges, innovation, clinical trials, and clinical applications for wound infection, regenerative medicine, burns, inflammation, and fibrosis as well as EMCR development sessions. AWTRS 2022 EMCR Award
Dr Rae Moses

The Society is proud to present the 2022 AWTRS EMCR Award to Dr Rachael Moses. A post-doctoral researcher in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Science, University of Melbourne, Rae aims to produce a viable 3D organotypic chronic wound model to replace rodent wound healing models, with the additional aim of replacing animal-derived products within the model. Development of this model will provide a greater understanding of the biology of chronic wounds, leading to more precise assessment of potential novel therapeutics for treatment. Click here to read more about Rae's research as an EMCR and how her cell biology research is helping understand the biology of chronic wounds and the assessment of novel therapeutics to ease this clinical burden.

AWTRS Member Publications

The AWTRS believes that promoting the knowledge and interchange between scientists, healthcare professionals, industry and other individuals that have an interest in wound healing and tissue repair will lead to improved wound outcomes. With this in mind, we aim to promote the research produced by our members with the addition of the following list of selected AWTRS member publications from 2022. If you would like to have your research included in our future issues, please email Rae Moses rachael.moses@unimelb.edu.au or Caitlin Berry-Kilgour caitlin.berrykilgour@postgrad.otago.ac.nz with the details of your publication.

Pets of AWTRS

We are starting a new segment in our newsletters - pets of AWTRS! We are taking submissions from now onwards, so send a picture of your furry (or not furry) companion and a short blurb to Rae Moses rachael.moses@unimelb.edu.au or
Caitlin Berry- Kilgour
caitlin.berrykilgour@postgrad.otago.ac.nz to have your pet be featured in the next newsletter.
Our first pet feature goes to newsletter editor Caitlin Berry-Kilgour's cats Fifi (left) and Boyd (right). They are recently adopted rescues who are being well-loved in their forever home. Fifi is a fluffy queen who thinks the world is made just for her, and Boyd is her quieter brother who enjoys the simple things like a long day lounging in the sunshine.

If you have the capacity to adopt, donate, or foster, please look up your local rescue charities or see the websites for SPCA Australia and New Zealand
