This Weekend
Remember when we had fresh flowers every Sunday for worship? The fresh flowers are returning on January 8. Here's how it works....

  1. Go to the Flower Sign Up poster in the narthex.
  2. Write your name next the date you would like to sponser the altar flowers.
  3. Take the flowers home after church. You paid for them, they are yours.
  4. Sponsors pay to cover the cost of the bouquet at the beginning of the month.
As most of you are aware, our long-time florist retired last year. They were very generous in keeping our cost the same for approximately 15 years! The cost of flower arrangements has risen significantly in that time and we must make concessions to keep the cost down. Cal Poly Floral will provide arrangements for us in January for $50 for one bouquet.

Please contact MaryAnn in the church office with any questions.

Church News and Notes
Adult Forums will resume on January 8!

Coming in January -
  • Justice Sunday
  • A film and discussion on Dietrich Bonhoffer
Update of 12-20
What will $340 bring Mt. Carmel? Reindeer-proof the Sanctuary roof? Hang four shiny new stockings on the Advent Wreath? Make a Santa-sized chimney in the Sunday School room?

The point is that the Raise The Roof Fund has reached $39,660 leaving just $340 to go to reach the $40,000 goal.

Yes, we have this small amount left to finish the $40,000 goal. If you can help, we ask you to please join in and put us over the goal by the end of December. Donation checks to Mt. Carmel should identify “Building Maintenance” or simply “Raise the Roof” and thanks from Santa and the whole Christmas team.

To the community of Mt. Carmel, the staff say THANK YOU so much for our unexpected bonus.

With much appreciation-
Pastor Richard, Paul Woodring, Dave Becker, MaryAnn Jakes, Tony Bloodwoth, Deanna Schultze, Lily Hinds
Justice Sundays

Beginning in January, Mount Carmel will observe “Justice Sunday” on the second Sunday of each month. The Adult Forum on Justice Sundays will explore the work being done outside and inside the Mount Carmel community to address a wide range of social justice issues.

Our inaugural Justice Sunday is on January 8 and we will be looking at the topic of housing
insecurity in SLO. We will be joined by Daisy Wiberg, Administrative Specialist for the City’s Homelessness Response Task Force. Daisy will update us on the City’s Strategic Plan to Prevent & Address Homelessness, which is in year one of a two year process.

We have all been aware of the growing numbers of homeless people in our communities.
Mount Carmel’s tenant, Love to Learn, has been impacted by probable homeless individuals vandalizing its business. Although Mount Carmel hosted the Homeless Shelter Overflow for many years, the dynamics have changed. We oftentimes feel at a loss as to the best approach to take, particularly with the chronically unhoused and mentally ill.

Come hear about what the City is doing. Have your questions in mind. Invite your neighbors to come as well. We’ll see you at the Adult Forum on January 8. Questions or comments may be directed to Patti Frey @ 805-235-1938.
Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2, NRSV).

Stephen Ministry offers a proven and effective way to organize, equip, and supervise a team of congregation members—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, one-to-one, Christ-centered care to people in the congregation and the community experiencing life difficulties.

Stephen Ministers are congregation members trained by their Stephen Leaders to offer care to people who are hurting. A Stephen Minister typically has one care receiver at a time and meets with that person once a week for about an hour.

Stephen Ministers are lay congregation members trained to provide one-to-one care to those experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or relocation.

Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life, but they all share a passion for bringing Christ’s love and care to people during a time of need.

Since 1975, more than 600,000 people from more than 13,000 congregations and other
organizations have been trained as Stephen Ministers.

In SLO county Stephen Ministry is coordinated in an ecumenical manner with participation from Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Methodists, Lutherans, Roman Catholics, and others. We find strength in numbers and a mutual desire to help.

Training is done by trained leaders, clergy and lay who have many years experience. In January, a new training session will be offered. Please contact Sandy Rowland, 805-296-9609, a Stephen Minister in our congregation for information about participating in this new class. You can also contact Canon Mark Hall, 209-609-7044, who leads our county-wide group.
