THE DREIDEL

Sharing a message from the Beth Israel Community:

In this recent article by Cantor Leon Litvack, the Dreidel and its origins as well as its significance, to Judaism and to other faiths and peoples as well, albeit under different names, is explored:

When I was a child growing up in Canada, one of my favourite toys was a little blue spinning top called a dreidel, with Hebrew letters on each of its four sides. They stood for words translated as ‘Great Miracle Happened Here’. It came out of my toybox for the Jewish festival of Chanukah, which begins this evening, and runs for eight days. It commemorates a miracle that occurred in ancient times, when the Greeks sacked the holy Temple in Jerusalem, and destroyed its contents. Of particular significance were the jars of oil used to light the all-important candelabrum; the invaders had destroyed almost all of the existing supply, except for one little jar, that would fuel the sacred lamp for only a single day. The miracle of Chanukah was that this container of oil lasted for eight days, until more could be produced....click HERE to read the rest!

UFP 2023 BUDGET

On Sunday December 11, members and friends of UFP met both in-person and online to hear a presentation of the proposed 2023 UFP budget by our Treasurer Joan Higginson. One of the glitches that day was some missing budget information in the slide deck. We've amended that and invite you to view the full slide deck here.
Please review the meeting minutes which have been added as the last two pages of the slide deck. These minutes will be seeking approval at our next general meeting.
Scott Donovan, Board Secretary.
