The Legacy Connection
January 2023

Friends of The Legacy Trail would like to wish everyone a healthy and happy 2023!

2023 Trust for Public Land Tour de Parks in March
Benefitting the Legacy Trail and all that it brings to our community, the annual Tour de Parks fundraiser on Sunday, March 19, 2023, is a great way to spend the day with friends and family while exercising and enjoying various parks along the ride.

Organized by Friends of The Legacy Trail, the Sarasota Manatee Bicycle Club, and Sarasota County, there are three different routes offered to participants: distances of 21, 35, and 62 miles going through 12 scenic parks in Sarasota County. Friends of The Legacy Trail is grateful to the Trust for Public Land for being the lead sponsor.

You can register now by going to the Friends of The Legacy Trail website or Active.com.

The ride includes breakfast, snacks at rest stations, and lunch after the ride. All this and a t-shirt (for the first 650 riders) for $55 if you register early. The price goes up on February 21. Last year we had close to 800 riders.

The ride will begin at the Historic Venice Train Depot, rain or shine. Final routes are still being confirmed and will be posted on our website. There will be a packet pickup prior to the event at Real Bikes, Bicycles International, and Sarasota Cycle. Registrants can also get their packets at the event.

If you would like to inquire about other sponsorship opportunities, please contact Louis Kosiba at louiskosiba24@gmail.com or Michelle Stanley at stanleymichelle2@gmail.com.

New Legacy Trail Map Brochure
The new Legacy Trail map brochure is now available online and in print (at trailhead kiosks and Friends of The Legacy Trail info tables). One side of the brochure shows the Legacy Trail route from downtown Sarasota to the Venetian Waterway Park in addition to the connector route to North Port. The other side of the brochure provides information on trailheads, parking, bathrooms, and other amenities, in addition to information on trail hours and rules.

Ringling Trail Complete Street Now Open
On December 15, the community celebrated enhanced bicycle safety and expanded multimodal opportunities when the Ringling Trail “complete street” opened. The event took place on the north side of the Ringling Boulevard – Legacy Trail intersection.

The Ringling Trail complete street features protected bicycle lanes for one mile between Lime and Pineapple avenues in downtown Sarasota, creating a safer road experience for recreational cyclists and commuters. The lanes also provide connectivity between the Legacy Trail at Payne Park and the downtown core.

“It’s an exciting time to be a cyclist in Sarasota,” said Mayor Kyle Battie, an avid cyclist. “Whether you ride to work or for recreation, protected lanes give bikers peace of mind. This was the missing link to take riders safely between the Legacy Trail and downtown. Already, there’s more activity along the corridor and we expect it will translate into increased customers and economic growth for our downtown merchants.”

Initiatives such as this, and the extension of the Legacy Trail, recently earned the City of Sarasota a LEED Gold certification with the U.S. Green Building Council.

Clark and Bee Ridge Overpass Designs

The Florida Department of Transportation recently presented their current concepts for the design of the Clark Road and Bee Ridge Road Legacy Trail overpasses to Sarasota County commissioners at their December 13 meeting. The plans are expected to be complete by the end of 2022, with construction to begin in the Fall of 2023. Both overpass projects are expected to be complete by November 2024. More information about the overpasses can be found on the Friends of The Legacy Trail website.

Helmet Fitters Needed
The State of Florida requires that any bicycle rider or passenger who is under 16 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet that is properly fitted, fastened securely on the head by a strap, and meets the federal safety standard for bicycle helmets.
Friends of The Legacy Trail has a program to provide free bike helmets to children under 16. To do this, we need trained volunteers who are certified to properly fit the helmets for the users. If you are interested in becoming a trained helmet fitter, please contact FLT Volunteer Coordinator Rita Miotti here. Thank you to all our volunteers.

Proper Helmet Fitting
If your helmet does not fit properly, it will not adequately protect your head in an accident. We often see poor-fitting helmets, loose helmets, people with caps under their helmets, and unbuckled helmets. There are many videos online that can show you how to wear a helmet properly. Stay safe out there!
Happy New Year to you and yours!

We are excited to ring in 2023 on the Legacy Trail! We’ve been busy keeping up with our day-to-day tasks and there are a few trail updates.

The Venetian Waterway Park is now open. Huge kudos to West Coast Inland Navigation District and the City of Venice for getting that project completed in a very timely manner.

Osprey Junction Trailhead is nearing completion! We are hoping the park will be ready to open at the end of January/early February. We will keep everyone updated on this long-awaited project completion.

As we start to hit peak busy season, I want to highlight some trail safety tips as a friendly reminder.

Trail users should remember the three Cs of trail use: Courtesy, Consideration, and Control.

There are a lot of people out there, so it is incredibly important we share the trail:
  • Speed limit – 15 mph
  • Warn before passing
  • Pass left – single file
  • Three-foot distance to pass
  • Bicycles yield to all others
  • Do not block the trail
  • Always stop and use crossing signals at road intersections
Wishing everyone a wonderful start to the New Year. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to reach me at meidel@scgov.net.

Surrey Pedalers Needed
Sarasota County is looking for volunteers to pedal their surrey on Tuesdays for the 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 12:00 p.m. shifts that last approximately 45 minutes each.

You’re in the driver's seat as you pedal the surrey (a four-wheel, four-passenger bicycle) for a 45-minute tour on the Legacy Trail. No previous bus driving experience required! And you don’t need to have Superman legs of steel — the surrey is geared for easy pedaling, not speed.

Become a Sarasota County volunteer by going to the volunteer webpage here. Scroll down to the "Volunteer Opportunities" section where you'll click on the "volunteer application" link. As you scroll through the volunteer application, you'll get to the "Opportunity Preferences" section. There, you'll select "PLEG – Surrey Ride Tour Pedalers" from the drop-down menu as your preference.

Surrey rides on the Legacy Trail will take place this year on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from January 10 through April 12, 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 12 p.m. More information about surrey rides can be found on the Friends of The Legacy Trail website here. Reservations are required.
