Happy Reading Everyone! (A quick note! Your email inbox may clip this newsletter shorter! Be on the lookout for a small button that says "[Message Clipped] view entire message" There is indeed more to read!)
Merry Christmas, Dear Church & Happy New Year!

Again, I may be a day or two early on the wishes for Happy New Year, but we are undoubtedly still in the Christmas Season! And I want to thank you for a most joyous Christmas celebration. We helped to tell the greatest story through music, word, dance, and of course, your story. These services left an indelible mark on me, as I hope they did for you. Thank you.

Another word of reminder as we head into this New Year’s weekend, our only service this weekend will be our Sunday 10am service on New Year’s Day. And we’re honored to welcome Melinda Alberty as a guest musician on Sunday! Melinda is a current member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, among several other accolades, so I hope you can join us as we ring in the new year with Melinda as she helps to lead worship.

I hope that this post-Christmas week has been relaxing for you and that you’ve had some time to just be. I’ve been sure to take it easy and have some special moments with the boys. And in that light, I want to share with you some things that have brought both brevity and contemplation. First, in contemplation, I’m a fan of Jan Richardson’s poetry, and I found this one this week:

How the Light Comes

by Jan Richardson

I cannot tell you
how the light comes.
What I know
is that it is more ancient
than imagining.

That it travels
across an astounding expanse
to reach us.

That it loves
searching out what is hidden,
what is lost,
what is forgotten
or in peril
or in pain.

That it has a fondness
for the body,
for finding its way
toward flesh,
for tracing the edges
of form,
for shining forth
through the eye,
the hand,
the heart.

I cannot tell you
how the light comes,
but that it does.
That it will.
That it works its way
into the deepest dark
that enfolds you,
though it may seem
long ages in coming
or arrive in a shape you did not foresee.

And so
may we this day
turn ourselves toward it.
May we lift our faces
to let it find us.
May we bend our bodies
to follow the arc it makes.
May we open
and open more
and open still
to the blessed light
that comes.

And to finish with a moment of brevity. Christmas is often many things to many people, and I find it fun to hear other people’s perspectives of this holiday. This American Life did an episode telling people’s stories of Christmas, and I wanted to share it with you. Click the link below to take a listen. Thank you again, Dear Church, and Happy New Year!
