SOLO & ENSEMBLE CONTEST
The deadline to enter PSD202's annual Solo & Ensemble Contest is this Thursday, December 22nd.
Performance at Solo & Ensemble Contest provides a great opportunity for students to improve as individuals beyond what is offered daily in the classroom. Students are responsible for organizing their own rehearsals (for ensembles), and preparing music on their own for a performance.
This year marks the first time we've held a Solo & Ensemble Contest since 2020. Students that enter the Solo Contest perform individually (or with a piano accompanist, live or with a playback track) and receive a written evaluation, division rating, and a 10-15 minute lesson with the evaluator. Additionally, the evaluators select the best performance in each room to perform at the Honors Recital later that afternoon.
Students that enter in the Ensemble Contest perform a piece of music with a group of their peers and also receive a written evaluation, division rating, and a 10-15 minute lesson with the evaluator. Students that are looking to grow as musicians are strongly encouraged to participate in this event as it places more individual responsibility on students and they are directly accountable for their own success.
Solos are $15 (plus the cost of a piano accompanist if the piece requires it) and $8/member in an ensemble (each member pays $8), so a trio (3 players) would cost $24 total. The cost of participation is to pay the evaluators that are hired for the day to be able to provide students with ratings as well as written feedback.
