Together We Can - Partnership in the Community

The Advancing Health Equity Core team sends our warmest wishes to our partners for the new year and thanks you for tirelessly working to advance equity.

In partnership,
The Equity Team

Community Health Worker (CHW) Network Highlight

The Houston Health Department, the University of Texas School of Public Health at Houston (UTSPH), and the Texas Epidemic Public Health Institute (TEPHI), will offer free-of-charge certification training for Community Health Workers (CHWs). The training will provide several tools revolving around topics on how to create connections between vulnerable populations and healthcare providers, guidance on helping community members navigate healthcare and social service systems as well as advocating for underserved individuals or communities to receive services and resources to address health needs.

HHD’s Equity and Access grant partners and HHD staff are welcome to register! This CHW certification will promote the purpose of the CDC Equity and Access grant to have CHWs embedded and sustained in our communities to continue to meet the needs of Houston’s most vulnerable and be prepared for any future crisis.

Details on registration coming soon! Stay tuned for a registration link in our February Newsletter!

Health Equity Story Map

Through story maps, the Houston Health Department and partner organizations work together to foster health equity for vulnerable Houston residents. This story map tool can act as a visual guide for identifying gaps and placement of resources in communities that may be less resilient to the impacts of COVID-19. To access this map, please click on the link here.

What Health Equity Means to Me:

Health Equity is the blueprint for broadening the impact to improve the quality of life for marginalized populations. When organization leaders work together cohesively without bias or judgment and share knowledge and resources in an open forum, their community’s social and economic infrastructure is strengthened, people become healthy, and opportunities are equalized — placing that community on the path to breaking down barriers and eliminating health disparities.
