Dear Friend,

This past year has been full of ups and downs in the fight for gender equality and reproductive freedom. Yet at each turn, we made sure our voice was heard loud and clear around the world. Our staff penned numerous op-eds, and we were cited by the globe’s most respected media outlets as experts in the field.

We always have and always will leverage our media presence to demand gender justice and human rights. Today, I’m excited to highlight some of the work that we were proudest to share with the public over the past year.

In the chaotic wake of the Supreme Court ruling that overturned the constitutional right to abortion in the United States, GJC's Akila Radhakrishnan took to the pages of The Nation to articulate a path forward for abortion rights activists in the US

“But as we watch the decimation of rights and confront the limits of a 200+-year-old constitutional framework, it is imperative that Democratic leaders and activists look outward, with humility, and learn from the countries expanding rights, not restricting them.”

— Akila Radhakrishnan, President, Global Justice Center

As the prospect of Roe v. Wade’s reversal in the United States became increasingly likely, Bloomberg News spoke to GJC’s Dr. Christine Ryan about her home country of Ireland and its recent victory for abortion rights:

“Women shouldn't need to make us cry to have their rights respected.”

— Dr. Christine Ryan, Legal Director, Global Justice Center

As part of a symposium on the case of Dominic Ongwen at the International Criminal Court, GJC’s Angela Mudukuti co-authored a piece that reflected on the intersectional feminist goals of a recent intervention in the case that GJC joined:

This was about joining forces. This was about sharing our respective experiences, skills, knowledge, resources and perspectives. This was about building with intention and integrity, a safe, supportive, respectful and uplifting space imbued with the collective feminist vision of approaching international criminal justice through a gender competent lens.

After the World Health Organization issued its landmark new guidelines on abortion care this year, GJC’s Merrite Johnson was asked to write an article for Women’s Media Center that explained the new guidelines in the context of abortion bans in the United States:

“The reality is that public health experts agree: narrow standards for abortion access are not justifiable. Abortion is healthcare, and healthcare is a human right. We must make abortion access a reality for all. The health and well-being of millions is at stake.”

— Meritte Johnson, Program Coordinator, Global Justice Center
