HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Welcome to the 51st consecutive weekly Indivisible Activate Newsletter of 2022 -- the last one of the year, I hope! Because of breaking news (such as the overturn of Roe), I wrote an 22 extra newsletters this year, for a grand total of 73. Let's cross our fingers for a slow news week ahead of New Year's Eve. Thanks for reading and sharing. My 2023 newsletter resolution is to move to Substack! - Wendy Brandes

Actions for Week of December 26

MONDAY, DEC. 26
CONTACT YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS - NY STATE
WHERE: WHEREVER YOU ARE
WHEN: NOW!

Due to the holidays, New York State residents might have missed Friday's email about Governor Kathy Hochul's nomination of anti-abortion Hector LaSalle to be the next chief judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, New York's highest court.  (So much for her promise to keep New York a sanctuary for reproductive rights.) Luckily, the state senate can block this nomination, but your elected officials need to hear from you before it's too late. I suggest both emailing and leaving a voicemail.

  • Kathy Hochul: Email; phone 518-474-8390
  • Brad Hoylman, head of senate Judiciary Committee: Email; phone 518-455-2451
  • Your state senator: Find your senator
  • Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins: Email;  518-455-2715
NATIONAL OPTION: Text the word RESIST to 50409 to use the free Resistbot service to contact your federal or state officials. After your initial set-up, it will take you about two minutes to send a pointed message to any politician, whether they are Democrats, Republicans, or Kyrsten Sinema. Resistbot is available 24/7 so if you're up in the middle of the night worrying, why not send those worries to the people in power? If any of your electeds are leaving office in January, send them the equivalent of a Yelp review. Did they do what you wanted them to do? If your elected will still be in office, tell them what you want done. Arrest Trump? Fight white supremacy? Ban assault weapons? Protect contraception? Whatever means the most to you -- share it.

TUESDAY, DEC. 27
'TIS THE SEASON TO TURN OFF FOX - NYC
WHERE: 48TH AND 6TH
WHEN: 12 PM ET - 1 PM ET

This is an action as reliable as this newsletter! The holidays won't stop Truth Tuesdays and Rise and Resist from gathering in front of Fox HQ in New York to tell Fox to stop sowing hate. We also have signs encouraging families to heal the wounds caused by this propaganda network.

  • RSVP on Facebook.  An RSVP is never required to attend any in-person action, but if there are any updates about time and location, an RSVP will keep you informed.
  • As with all in-person actions, if you can't stay for the entire event, stay for as long as you can -- or just walk by and take a photo for social media.
DC-AREA OPTION:  Defenders of Democracy Against Disinformation will have its next Fox protest in Bethesda, Md., on Tuesday, Jan. 24, from 4 PM ET - 5 PM ET. More information will be provided closer to the date, but you can put it on your calendar now.

NATIONAL OPTION: Shop for our popular Fox Lies gear here.

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 28
DONATE TO TEXAS ABORTION FUND - NATIONAL

For my December 23 birthday, I asked Facebook friends to donate to the Texas Equal Access Fund, which helps provide abortion care to people in need in Texas. Abortion funds pay for things like travel to free states, babysitting, procedures, medications -- basically anything people need. We've already surpassed my modest goal of $600. As of this writing, $927 has been donated and it would be nice to get to $1,000 before the fundraiser ends tomorrow. I love round numbers!

THURSDAY, DEC. 29
DEFEND DRAG STORY HOUR - QUEENS, NYC
WHERE: JACKSON HEIGHTS LIBRARY (81ST ST, NORTH OF 37TH AVENUE.)
WHEN: 4 PM ET - 5 PM ET

A hate group called Guardians of Divinity (AKA "GOD") has announced plans to terrorize a Drag Story Hour. A coalition of groups is organizing to peacefully counter-protest on behalf of the story-readers, the children, and the library. The location is just a couple of blocks from the 82nd St. 7 train station. Organizers will bring the signs, banners, and any necessary props. Just bring yourselves.

  • If you live in the area, you are welcome to walk by and take a photo for social media. Amplifying these actions counts as activism!
NATIONAL OPTION: If you're not familiar with Drag Story Hour, check out the website. If you work at a library, consider booking an event. If you don't work at a library, call your local one and request an event. You can also donate. Bonus: donations are tax-deductible, so you can squeeze in one last charitable act before the end of the year.

SATURDAY, DEC. 31
DON'T DROP THE BALL ON CLIMATE CHANGE - NYC
WHERE: GRAND CENTRAL TERMINAL (UNDER THE CLOCK, MAIN CONCOURSE)
WHEN: 4 PM ET - 5 PM ET

If you thought the tireless activists of Rise and Resist were going to be taking disco naps before their New Year's Eve parties, you thought wrong. They'll be asking celebratory folks hurrying through Grand Central to resolve to fight climate change in 2023. There will be signs and banners, as well as noisemakers and songs.

  • RSVP on Facebook.
  • As with all in-person actions, if you can't stay for the event, you are welcome to walk by and take a photo with us for social media. Amplifying these actions counts as activism.

SUNDAY, JAN. 1
SIGN SOMEONE UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER - NATIONAL

Get your 2023 off to a good start, activism-wise, by asking a friend/family member/neighbor/innocent bystander if you can sign them up for this newsletter. Don't count on them to do it themselves -- see if they'll let you do it for them. (Do NOT sign anyone up without permission, of course!) Who should you ask? Anyone who has said to you, "This is terrible, but what can I do?"  -- Indivisible Activate NYC 2022 newsletter #51, curated by Wendy Brandes, who hopes you have a happy, healthy, fascism-free 2023.
